File view help

OK, so Windows 8 does a lot of counter-intuitive things that are maddening as hell, but the one that I'm struggling with (today) is how to make each folder view different. I work with photographs quite a bit, and have them sorted into their own folders. These folders are listed by a stock number. When looking through a list of folders by stock number, it is obviously most practical and useful to view them as a list. Click VIEW > LIST and everything is fine.

Find the folder I want and open it. It's full of photos, which I would like to view as thumbnails. Click VIEW > Large Icons. Good.

Go back to the main directory with all the folders with stock numbers, and they are all now thumbnails, not a list. Click VIEW > LIST and I get my list back. Go back into the folder with pictures and it's a list.

So how the hell do I set it so that the behavior of one folder doesn't dictate the behavior of ALL folders? All the older operating systems did this naturally, but Windows 8 seems to think that I want them all the same all the time. I've already wasted more time than I'd care to admit looking for the answer.

Anyone remember when Windows was fairly intuitive and you could at least feel your way through the menus and figure it out? God I miss those days...

Hello Toolman, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It sounds like you are in the Pictures library. If so, then that's why. All folders in a library share the same folder views of whatever was last set.

Only actual folders (ex: "C:\Users\(user-name)\Pictures") have their own separate folder views.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

I don't think I'm in the pictures library. I have separate folders in the Documents library, which I suppose is the replacement for "My Documents." They're just regular photos in separate folders, not in the Photos library. In fact, the whole directory in which all the photos are stored was copied from my old PC directly and not created in Windows 8. It looks like the folder in which I'm working is Libraries > Documents > Current Inventory (my name for the folder in which I'm storing the photos). Going the other way around by clicking on C > Users > [User Name] > My Documents > Current Inventory has the same issue.

If I'm stuck in a library, how do I get out and go somewhere else that isn't trying to outsmart me? I can't even find a way to create a directory and/or a folder somewhere else in the computer anymore...

Yep, it's the same in any one of the libraries.

One way would be to open "This PC", and use the folders in it. These are shortcuts of your actual user folders that will allow separate folder views in them and any subfolders in them.

I'm sorry, I don't even know what "This PC" is. I can't find it on any of the menus or desktops or whatever the various things are called now. I know I'm getting a little off track and wasting your time here. I hate to ask for more help to chase that particular rabbit down that particular rabbit hole, it doesn't sound like an easy solution.

I'm sorry, not to belabor the point, but I don't have "This PC" in any of my various File Explorer views and while my interface looks somewhat similar to the one shown in the tutorial, I have no folders visible except on the navigation pane down the side. It also seems that creating a folder anywhere on the C: drive has the same issues. The tutorial to which you linked is mostly about removing folders or restoring default folders and I have do DOWNLOAD something to try to make it work? That's not what I'm looking for--I just want to be able to set each folder's view preferences separately.
