System Restore from W8 Install disk for a W8.1 System?

Dumb question - if I panic and have to do a system restore or system reset using the install DVD for W8 what will happen to the W8.1 version I just downloaded and installed?

I don't know if that will work, probably not, but you can always try it, at the most it will inform you that it can't find any restore points. We are after all, using the Install Disk to tell the installed OS to run System Restore. I don't know, try it, if it works or does not work, let us know. I've never tried it, but I have both 8 and 8.1 install disks.

    Hello Ken,

If you upgraded to 8.1 and do a reset or refresh, then it'll go back to 8. If you like, you could create a custom recovery image to use to refresh with instead to not lose 8.1 though.

If you do a system restore, it'll only go back to a point of time in 8.1 that the restore point was created on. Any restore points you had before upgrading to 8.1 would have been removed.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Could he just re-download or re-install the 8.1 update if that happens? Make sure all your important data is backed up.

Have done a clean reinstallation from the ISO purchased in the 25 offer which included media.
It was NOT done in the APP STORE.
During the installation I was offered the choice of downloading either W8 or W8.1.

In that case, you will not be able to refresh or reset with a Windows 8 installation media on Windows 8.1.

You may or may not be able to do a system restore, but I wouldn't count on it either.

You'll need to use the same installation media as what you have installed.

Yep, he sure could. Luckily this is not anything to worry about in this case though.

Not quite sure whether you are referring to my previous post.
Both System Restore and Media are working perfectly in W8.1
Windows Media was installed directly from the Microsoft website using my key.
Of course this was a CLEAN installation so only the system was installed, so backup of personal data is essential.

Since I have three copies of W8 and three machines running W8.1 I will create a Custom Recover Image for each machine. I already make complete system backups early and often using Acronis 2014 and EaseUS. Seems like Microsoft should have a way for those of us that loaded up on W8 and then "upgraded" to W8.1 to get restore to W8.1 capability.
