Solved Cannot find Windows Search, how can I manually turn it on?
I realised you cannot search your computer with Windows Search disabled in Windows 8/8.1 Metro, I have looked for the entry in the Windows Features / Services but could not find it. (I previously turned it off, now I cannot see the entry)
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Also I now cannot enter PC Settings (Metro) since I was playing around with Start Menu applications and forgot to put the shortcut back in (not sure if there is a proper link to PC Settings but I removed the shortcut and cannot get in through Control Panel > Change Account Type / Manage Accounts > Add a new user in PC Settings will not launch PC Settings)

When I ran the .exe (after I unblocked it) it just closed without doing anything, this happens to me aswell when I try to launch PC Settings from the charms bar :/
I think I may have to reinstall.

yeah sounds like you might want to do a repair install at this point but also search is a service and should be able to be ran by running services.msc

I did the same kind of messing around, gave up trying to repair it. I just finished a clean install. All is well!

Yeah the Windows Search / Search Icon wasn't inside the services.msc so I just did a clean install, only took 10mins to get Windows 8 set-up then I just downloaded Windows 8.1 and it was finished installing by the time I woke up.

You can search for files on the metro screen by just beginning typing what you're looking for, and in the windows environment by pressing Windows (flag) key + S. Don't know if it will work with search disabled and missing. Just a suggestion.
