    Hidden items stay hidden

I unchecked the Hidden Items but those items did show up in the system drive. What could be wrong?

    Hello Churin,

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing what is still showing that should be hidden to see if it may help to ID the issue.

When you have the Hidden items checkbox checked in the ribbon bar like that, it will show your hidden system files. Unchecking it should have them no longer show.

Please see below. There should be no hidden file.

The problem was solved by clicking "Reset Folders" button on Folder Options' view tab.
Your question prompted me to review the Folder Options and noticed the Reset Folder button. I never used this button before but tried. Voila, those files were magically reappeared.
Thank you very much for your help.

    Churin,

I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted.

However, in your Folder Options screenshot above, you have Show hidden files, folder, and drives selected instead of Don't show hidden files, folder, and drives.

Show hidden files, folder, and drives is the same as having the Hidden items box checked in the ribbon bar. With this set, you will have your hidden items showing.

I think you have confused by not having Hide protected operating system files not checked, that you wouldn't have any hidden files showing. That's not so. It's just that you must have both checked to see the hidden protected OS files.

    This is exactly my understanding.

I am having a bit of difficulty understanding the above because of the double negative words.
Anyway, as you see in the above images, the Hidden items is checked in the ribbon bar and Hide protected operating system files is unchecked. Did you mean this combination will not work or not show the protected system files? It did not work initially but worked after clicking the Reset Folders. Note that clicking Reset Folders did not change those check mark statuses.

Hide protected operating system files and Show hidden files, folders, and drives (aka: Hidden items)are two different settings for two different types of hidden files.

Show/Don't Show hidden files, folders, and drives (aka: Hidden items) is to only show/hide hidden files, folders, and drives.

Hide protected operating system files is to show/hide protected OS files. For example, the faded desktop.ini files.

    • To show protected OS files, you must have Hide protected operating system files unchecked, and Show hidden files, folders, and drives checked or Hidden items (ribbon bar) checked.

    • To not show protected OS files, you could have Hide protected operating system files checked, and/or Don't show hidden files, folders, and drives checked, and/or Hidden items (ribbon bar) unchecked.

After all are said and done, is it correct to say that there will be no hidden file or folder if the options settings are done as shown in the images above?

Hello, can anyone please tell me if and how I can keep the taskbar locked out of sight, i.e. so that it doesn't pop up when I'm at the bottom of the screen. (I'd like this to be reversible.) I use 8.1, with both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, if this is relevant. Thanks in advance.
