Only if you have Don't show hidden files, folders, and drives selected or Hidden items unchecked, and/or Hide protected operating system files checked.

Please review my statement as you quoted as above. It is about the options settings to show all files and folders.
My experiments indicates that all one need to do is to put a check mark on Hidden items on the ribbon bar, and nothing else.

I understand what you said mate, but you are confused about these settings a bit.

If you check Hidden items in the ribbon, it is the same as selecting Show hidden files, folders, and drives in folder options. They are just different ways to set the same setting.

Those two above are not the same as Hide protected operating system files.

I do not think I indicated that "those two above are the same as Hide protected operating system files".
What I wanted to do was to show all files and folders. Up until W7 I was doing the option setting on Folder Options. Since W8 I have been doing this on the Ribbon bar only. The first image shows how it was done. But hidden files were not shown as indicated by the title of this thread. Then I reviewed the Folder Options and found nothing wrong. How I resolved the problem was as previously reported. I still do not understand why that could be the solution.

What happened is that when you checked Hidden items in the ribbon (aka: Show hidden files, folders, and drives in Folder Options), it only showed those hidden items.

Only when you also unchecked Hide protected operating system files in Folder Options, it then showed those hidden files as well. For example, the desktop.ini files.

I understand your statement about how the options work. Maybe I am confused that with my particular problem which started this thread.

The second image above means that the check mark on Hide protected operating sys files must have been manually removed - though I do no recall I ever did this. The point is that when I reviewed that check mark status it was off. Why then all those protected operating sys files were not shown(the 1st image).

Hello, can anyone please tell me if and how I can keep the taskbar locked out of sight, i.e. so that it doesn't pop up when I'm at the bottom of the screen. (I'd like this to be reversible.) I use 8.1, with both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, if this is relevant. Thanks in advance.
