Dumb question! What is the difference between 8 and 8.1.

I just moved from 8 to 8.1, today. I don't see much difference. Am I missing something?

    Hi there

I think (apart from slightly better performance) the one that interests most DESKTOP users is BOOT directly to Desktop".
In any case W8 is being replaced in it's entirety by Windows 8.1 -- so you should qualify for a FREE upgrade. Updates will soon be stopped for W8.

If you've got W8 IMO it's a NO BRAINER to switch.

I wouldn't say a no-brainer. Upgrading some of our corporate laptops to 8.1 from 8.0 has proven a bit tricky. Lots of little broken things. But doing a clean install of 8.1 seems to be working just fine for us.

    Hi there

IMO as Windows 8.1 is a FREE update for W8 and W8.2 (or so they say) is due to appear on the horizon's then I'd say that it makes no sense for Ms to keep supporting W8 once W8.1 is rolled out properly.

@Pparks1 -- your company probably took a courageous step in actually using W8 / W8.1 on its laptops --I think most companies are staying with W7 or even upgrading to W7 - from XP - avoiding W8 (any version) altogether.

Supporting users on W8 for BYOD's is another issue though so I'd imagine some people would have it on company laptops for testing purposes.

I know several large companies running SAP ERP software where the DB and Application servers won't run on any form of W8 - the GUI (which users use for accessing both productive applications and the development environment ) however can run provided the IE 11 is set to run in compatibility mode. Some transactions though fail so it's still a turkey shoot using W8 -- most companies gave just given up on that and stick with W7. (The SAP system itself (Application and DB servers) usually run on some sort of Linux based systems so that's not actually a problem.

    Cheers

Yeah, I found that 8 was just better on the new laptops. Easier to reinstall with embedded keys, faster boots, etc. Built my image with a third party start menu, go straight to desktop, and ensure all default apps are not metro style apps and users have been pretty happy.

I now have 3 users on Windows 8.1, two were Windows 8.0 images laid down by me, and then immediate upgrade to 8.1 from MSDN media before I gave them their machines. The other was an established system upgraded from the store...that one has been far more problematic..fortunately it's another of my IT co-workers, so he can handle his own issues.
