Sometimes a program window hides the taskbar so I have to minimize every window I have open until I see the taskbar line. How do I fix this?

Thanks for the answer! That sends me to the Start screen though. Windows-T might work on the other hand, but not sure if it brings the task bar to the front. I'll try the next time it's covered. But is there no way to make sure the task bar is always on top?

Odd.
I use Classic Shell.
The Classic Shell menu appears along with the task bar.

You could turn it off as caperjack suggests.

I don't know anything else to suggest.

Just wondering but which applications hide your taskbar ? Media players ? or maybe a browser in kiosk mode ?

By default the taskbar should always be on top (although still transparent). Back in win 7 you could even disable this setting but in 8 it should always be in top, at least for regular windows.

Classic shell has a setting that (i think by default) makes the windows key show the taskbar & classic shell menu. Shift-win opens the new-fangled "toys in a sandbox" style start screen.

I also use autohide for my taskbar (helps with a vertically challenged laptop screen) and this setup seems to work fine, I have not had the problem you've described.
