Solved Icons not responding to mouse clicks - aps won't launch

When I click to start an application (any application) nothing happens. Sometimes the little globe thingy runs around and around for minutes before stopping. Other times nothing at all. In addition, everything is running very -very - very slow. I launch Word (Office 365) and it can take up to five minutes for it to open. Sometimes I type faster than the words can appear on screen. It takes much too long to boot or to shut down - up to five minutes.

This is what I've tried: refreshed system OS; restored all settings to defaults and reloaded Win 8; ran the system with no added software for four days; ran system without anti-virus/security; refreshed bios; removed and restored all application software; ran system check, system defrag (it reported no need for defrag, but I ran it anyway); ran Malware Bytes (found nothing).

What's on the system: Office 365 and nothing else. I had installed Photoshop, Lightroom and In Design, but removed them due to the system instability. I use Bit Defender security. I also had games installed, but they were removed during the restore/reinstall and are no longer on the system.

Specs: Dell Inspiron 17R - 5721 Windows 8; 8GB Ram

Yes, I ran Disk diagnostic and it didn't identify any issues. Basically the system just doesn't respond properly to anything - from being very slow in Word to not responding to mouse clicks on icons to taking up to 6-8 minutes just to shut down (everything is closed prior to shutting down).

Forgive me for being a bit dense, but is this what you wanted to see? It's what comes up when I attempt to access disk management, but I'm not sure this tells you anything. If this isn't the right image or you need more information, please let me know. As you can probably tell, I am not an expert! Thanks for trying to help.

Hi Miles - I apologize for taking so long to respond to your post. Shortly after loading the image of the disk management shot, the laptop crashed. It then refused to even re-boot, even using the rescue boot disk failed to launch the system. I contacted Dell and the tech discovered the hard drive and connector (not sure I'm using the correct term) were fried. Thankfully, because the system is very new, they are replacing it with another (new, not refurbished) system. Hopefully, that one won't develop the same issues. Thank you for attempting to help me resolve this issue.
