What is 'Program'?

In Task Manager's Startup tab I see an item vaguely identified as 'Program' (see attached graphic).

If I right-click on it the Properties menu item is grayed out.

Is there a way I can discover more about this task and specifically whether I should uninstall it, and how to uninstall it?

Thanks for any advice.

Not sure what you are looking at, if that is your Task Manager, then something is very hosed. Tell us what you did to get to that window? If thats the startup tab, something is wrong.

Download CCLEANER

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

And go into "Tools" and "Startup" and see exactly what programs are starting up, since Task Manager is not showing you what's there.

If you right click it, does it not show you the "open program location" dialogue?

Dave, I'm not sure if the word "Program" is a Program, I think it is the title, and there is nothing in his Startup, which should not be.

Thanks for the idea, but I think it is an extract from the complete folder. Have a look in your startup window and you will see what I mean. No such column title as "Program"

The first graphic that I posted was too terse.

Here's another screen shot of the Task Manager Startup tab, this time showing the right-click menu for 'Program'.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Here's my ccleaner Startup display.

If I use the 'right scroll' icon there is nothing to the right of 'Context Menu'. In other words, the graphic shows all six Startup tabs in ccleaner.

With so little data, pulled out of context it is difficult to see the problem. Anyway if that "Program" is not giving up its secrets, than it's best to shut it down and see if anything is missing it.

I think it is something you have left over in your system tray, from an earlier uninstall

Have a look in these two items, and see if there is anything which might ring the bell?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

In my case, in Windows 7, I had loaded a Dell audio driver (IDT) which turned out to be resource intensive. The uninstall was dirty and it took quite a while to track it to the entries above.

I'll do that.

Also, I wonder if it is an infection that I should figure out how to remove.

Nice find! I hadn't noticed the 'numbered' entry.

I show a screen show when I right click on the 'numbered' entry. Options are (in case the screen shot is small and hard to read):

Disable
Delete
Save to Text File
Open in RegEdit

I haven't disabled it yet. I'll wait and see if you are able to find any info on it.

I did a Save to Text file, then opened the text file. Here are the contents:

I'm attaching screen shots of the registry entries for the two keys that you mentioned.

These entries don't ring a bell with me, but then I am troubleshooting this on my parents' PC.

This PC was bought as a Windows 8 machine (i.e. never had a previous version of Windows on it) and I recently updated it to 8.1

Thanks for all of the responses, davehc XweaponX, David, CountMike [I hope I haven't missed anyone]!! Happy Thanksgiving to you!
