What is 'Program'?

  1. #21

This is how I would go for it.
First export the Hewlett Packard entry, or, even better, the whole registry, to a safe temp folder somewhere on the computer.

After that, delete the Hewlett Packard entry and see if you are rid of "Program"
I don't see any mishap with the printer, but, if the "program" is still there, you might just as well import the reg entry again, and we will think up something else.

P.S Later. I had this in my troubleshooting notes, I recollected that this had been in one of Brinks tutorials in Windows 7. Googling brought it up as a tutorial, also in Windows 8..

Ok, it looks like it was some AVAST automatic update, it was supposed to run only once, but it left residue in your Startup Programs.

If you are not using AVAST anymore, delete it if you can, looks like it is located in Task Scheduler, Task Scheduler may be putting it in there, see if there is a setting for it in TS, remove that as well.

We are using Avast on this PC, and we have updated Avast versions at least once.

The "Number" program is related to Avast (it appears in my W7 install).

I searched for it on my PC and eventually found that it is referred to in the Registry under a "run" key, instead of a "runonce" key.
I haven't removed it just in case it is important.

Davec, probably I'm being dense, but: what Hewlett Packard entry are you referring to? Is this in the context of the 'Program' entry that is in Task Manager Startup or is it in the context of the numbered entry reported by ccleaner's Startup - Windows tab?

    Thanks.

I dont think that HP entry was related, it was the AVAST updater, which, since he is using it, is a valid program. But if AVAST is not updating at the time, maybe it should be removed if it can be removed, it not, leave it as is.
