Solved Cannot launch pinned Office files from the taskbar?

This was working until today. Now, if I right click my Word or Excel icon on the task bar, I see my pinned and recently accessed files, but if I click to open (or right click and then click open) the following happens - the menu goes greyed out for slightly less than a second, then the entire task bar disappears for a second, then the notification icons reappear, and half a second later the task bar icons reappear, but no files open. The icon itself works, to open the program, it's just the files which will not open. It only seems to Office which is affected. Rather annoying. Any ideas?

Have you tried deleting those shortcuts from the taskbar and making new ones? Sometimes a shortcut will get loused up.

You said "taskbar" but where did the shortcut come from originally? For taskbar to work, you have to use the shortcuts from within Program Files, and those shortcuts, if you don't have Start8 or Classic Shell installed, can be in one of four places on your C drive.

Did you make the shortcuts by clicking "Pin to Taskbar" in the Start Screen? - Thats probably why it does not work, the Shortcut has to also be ON the Start Screen- Check to see if it has been deleted.

Hi thanks for the response.
I have a Word and Excel icon on my Start screen. From there I right clicked and chose to pin the programs to the task bar. Now whenever I open a document, I get a list of "recent documents" when I right click the program icon on the task bar, and I also have some frequently accessed files pinned in the same place. These are the files which won't open any more, but they did until yesterday. If I open Word (or Excel) using the task bar, it opens, then I get the normal list of pinned/recent documents within Word and they open all right. I tried deleting the files from the taskbar list but they still don't work if repinned (and still reappear automatically i.e. recent) . *scratches head*

Just discovered that it's not only Office. If I press the Windows key and X the commands and options list appears, but nothing happens when I click on them (except the above mentioned behaviour task bar disappears/reappears).

Ok then something is wrong with that system.

Try running a DISM command from an admin command prompt, may have to do it from Safe Mode Admin:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

after you do that run "SFC /scannow" in a command prompt at least 3 times.

Hi,
Before I read your post I had tried /scannow but only once. I then did a system refresh and now everything is working again. Thanks anyway! Task manager had also stopped working, also Norton.
When I refreshed the first thing I did was install Norton again, and immediately everything crashed, could not even uninstall Norton, no internet... managed to get the Norton uninstall tool via another pc and got rid. Hey presto, laptop works again. I don't know what caused this whole issue but I am blaming Norton (which was foisted on me when laptop purchased!)

Ok, Norton. What a POS, that was the cause. If you are using Windows 8.1, then Norton has BIG PROBLEMS, they don't really have a compatible version. Any computer I get that's new, Norton comes OUT, I just deleted the heck out of it from a brand new HP laptop, it was Windows 8, but I eradicated it anyway.
