If the machine came with Windows 8

If the machine came with Windows 8, is it true you can only reinstall with the 1 set of disks it lets you burn or (if a disk gets scratched), you have to but media from the manufacturer (if they still sell it) or buy a new copy of windows?

You could probably upgrade it to 8.1 for free if that offer is still happening, but if the machine works well? I would not do it.

If your machine has a recovery partition which can re-install 8 back to the way it came, then I might experiment with updating the OS to 8.1 - And then if you had trouble you could use the recovery partition and put 8 back in.

The Disks that you burned, are those Windows Recovery Disks? Because they removed Windows Recovery from 8.1 and those disks won't work.

You could image you present OS & your Recovery drive on USB with Macrium Reflect & thus be able to restore it at any time.

No, with Windows 8 if the OS came with the machine, the code is embedded into the BIOS. You can use any copy of the media to install your OS (Technet, MSDN, Retail, etc).

    1) You would need to use the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.

    2) If the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app is still working after update to Windows 8.1, the app will make a Windows 8 Recovery.
For example Sony app will still work.

Ok, so when you get a new machine and you are prompted to make "The Recovery Disks" - Those are the re-install disks, not just a backup of what you have on the machine?

I've never understood how those work, cos I;ve neer been able to use em to restore an OS, but Im sure Im doing it wrong.

Ok, but I'm wondering if any of these apps are based on the backup and Restore that MS has taken out of Windows 8.1?

It's odd, on 8, I still have "Windows 7 File Recovery".
