Solved DVD drive is powered off, Lenovo X230, Windows 8.1 64 bit

I apologize for my english in advance.
Yesterday I update my laptop to Windows 8.1(full specifications are available in my profile).
Then I noticed the following: The icon of DVD drive was changed and:
"Drive is powered off. To turn on the optical drive, press the eject button on the optical drive".
After pressing the DVD drive is powered on, but after few minutes it powered off again.

i think thats normal behavour , it will work when ever you need to use it ,can you right click on the icon and click on eject to open it [i cant check mine right now on iam my mac]almost positive mine is like that

But no, this was not normal behavior for the past year. This is from today. After starting the computer, everything is normal. 2-3 minutes later, the DVD icon is changing and the device turns off

you said it started after win8.1 update' win8.1 is more than a update its a full kernel upgrade,with many changes ,and i have see this on other laptops and towers ,and assume it to be normal ,power saving option ,i thought ,but i could be wrong

What happens when you put a disk in the drive, it should power up.

Check in your Device Manager, see if the device is Disabled but still there, if so, enable it.

I cant put a disk in drive without opening it before. But when I push button for openining the drive is power on.
Its a fist way to power on. The second is - with double click on icon of empty drive.
There no problems with status of drive in device manager.

Maybe next additional information will help know how to diagnose the problem and help me solve it.
As you know, the installer warns that will remove some applications during the upgrade. One of these, I see that it is removed is virtual CD 10. Furthermore, I noticed something else. I use Ultra Base. It saw in devices and printers and in eject button. Now instead appeared following device: __ RAID__ _DUMMYDEVICE____ SCSI Other Device.

Ufffff. Before the upgrade I did image of the system with Acronis. I do not know whether to downgrade to Windows 8 with Acronis.

AH I know what it is then - The Optical Device you see - Is not a real device, it is what is leftover from Virtual CD.

What you may try to do is stick a CDVD in the drive, and open Drive Manager - Then see if it shows up in Driver Manager - If it does, assign a letter.

Otherwise you may have to run a DISM command to restore the OS image. Try what I suggest first, see if a CD that you insert shows up in Drive manager without a letter added, if it does, add a letter. It will sport a brand new Optical Device, the other one that is there is a dead Virtual Drive.

Also, go into Device manager when you have a CD in the drive that you inserted prior to booting. Then go into Device Manager and scan for updates - Right Click on the real Optical device, and choose Scan for New Hardware.

If the dummy device is in Device Manager - REMOVE IT.

You should have cancelled your Update when that happened with Virtual CD, and went in a d removed it manually - this is the source of this whole problem.

See, in Device Manager choose "Show Hidden Devices" and look for your Dummy CD Drive in the CD Drives list

Dont touch the MS Virtual drive, just remove that one Dummy drive:



(I dont have any other dummies, but that is where the dummy you have will show up)

And next - STOP using Virtual CD, use UltraISO instead, its pretty cheap. You can also use MagicDisc - both are compatible with 8 and 8.1 - MagicDisc will add dummy drives as well, but they vanish when not used.

Once you get rid of your dummy drive, you should be able to open your Tray from within windows.

It's 05.40 AM. The clock in the forum wrong shows that my Local Time in Bulgaria is 06:40 AM. That was until October 30, when the period of Daylight Saving Time expired and the clock is set 1 hour backward in accordance with astronomical time. Its ok, most likely I'm asleep when you post, and you're asleep when I post, that is if we keep conventional hours.

What really needs to happen, is for you to remove all vestiges of VCD 10 - Look for any left over folders in "Users\(User)\Appdata\ and all three Appdata folders under Appdata.

Check your registry for left over VCD 10 entries too, just enter the name or "Virtual CD"/

I used to use Daemon Tools, then I switched to PowerISO, which was slightly better and finally to UltraISO and MagicDisc. Alcohol 120% also has a Virtual Drive.

I'm not sure about UltraBase, is that a Program that requires a Data CD being inserted? First you have to get rid of all Virtual CD reg entries and leftover files, then you should do a DISM command: Don't bother with the other commands, just do this one. It has to be run in an Elevated Command Prompt - You can get to that by hitting Windows Key + X and choosing Admin Command Prompt.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

I realized the reason and solved the problem myself.
The problem has no direct relationship as thought with upgrade to Windows 8.1. Some Lenovo applications are also updated after that and a module of one of them - "battery stretch" turns off optical drive. It expressly states that is made when the program is active, but the problem is that this is not the case. Even when it is not active, the optical drive turns off. I stopped the service, which is responsible for this, and all is well again

I used to lose CD and DVD drives under Windows 2000 and XP but never from within Vista through 8, so this whole thing was bugging me, I've never heard of a Power Save utility that powered down the CD drive. Leave it to Lenovo.
