Newly installed Windows 8.1, issue with the search feature

It used to be in Win7 that I'd open the start menu, type in, say, "device manager", "mouse" or whatever and get the relevant configuration screen. In fact, this was the one thing I ever even used the start menu for.

Come 8.1 and this no longer seems to work. If I open the tile menu and type in something like "device manager" it says it can't find any results.

Can I do something to get the various Windows applets in the text search? I like the rest of the new menu, so I don't want to install one of those applications that turn Win8's menu into a 7 lookalike.
