What do you want/expect from future versions of Windows?

I can't imagine going back to pre-Windows 7 without the 'winkey+right/left' snapping. It makes managing things so much easier for me.

I can't imagine going back to pre Windows 8, with it's new move/copy dialouge box making it so individual files can be paused, and each job is placed neatly in the same window instead of loads of them either covering one another or being all over the screen.

Windows 8.1 itself makes it easier to move files around by moving certain folders into 'My Computer/This PC'. If I move something to This PC/Downloads, the navigation pane doesn't auto expand to C:/Users/Karl/Downloads instead. I only have to visit two areas of the windows explorer navigation pane (This PC and Recycle Bin).

I hope that one day we get the ability to see the file size of a folder as well as files, and perhaps the ability to choose weather that filesize is bytes, kb, mb, gb, tb etc. I'd also kinda like Microsoft Security Essentials aka Windows Defender to return to form, and Windows Movie Maker (pre 'Live' overhaul), just with modernized filetype associations and HD video capabilities.

imho, there is way too much plumbing in the OS now, if all that cack is stripped out and Metro disabled, the OS will be Lightning fast. It IS Lightning fast:

I recently installed ex7forW8, which totally disables the Start Screen by installing Windows 7's Explorer.Exe, which also puts the old Start Menu back in.

I re ran my PC assessment, and it went up from 3.4 to 3.5, so now I have the speed of Windows 8 and the Start Menu of 7. This will not work in 8.1 though.

There may be too much plumbing, but it is not WinRT cack.
I have about 40 metro apps installed along with desktop programs and the CPU utilization idles at zero.
The PC boots in 7 seconds. Programs execute instantaneously.
You might not have such a view if your WEI score was over 8.

If you posted a screenshot of your desktop programs installed, I'll bet there's some cack in there as well.
The OS will be as high powered as your hardware and software configurations make it.

For future versions of Windows, there is almost no possibility that everyone will be satisfied.
No matter what they put in or take out,

I cant ever afford a PC that has such a score, so it's all moot. Look, I don't WANT this stuff, I was very happy to find ex7forW8. Too bad it don't work in 8,1, 8.1 is even worse than 8. I dont need MS telling me what EXE files I can run, I have to use all kinds of tools to remove viruses and 8 makes it difficult to get rid of these things. First they came up with DEP, and now they are blocking certain code. IO hated it in XP SP1 and I still hate it, and now they are building that crap into the CPUs.

Also I don't use any metro apps at all and I play Angry Birds on my iPhone, if I wanted a tablet OS I would buy an iPad with iOS 7 on it. When I am on my PC I want it to ACT like a PC, when on a tablet, I want it to act like a tablet.

If you love this crap thats fine, but I want it simple, cos all of my systems are very OLD. I dont care about how fast they boot though, all I care abut is my ability to do my work. And RT makes that harder to do, so I decided to ignore it, and now I can totally eradicate it when I wish to.

I use Desktop Programs cos I use a Desktop, and when I find cack in those, I remove them from Desktop apps as well. I modify just about all of the programs I use from Photoshop to Pro Tools.

Geez ... X , I could take each of those sentences apart like we used to :zip:
You have an IPhone, What's that?
Windows 8+ is designed for cutting edge hardware and software. What do you expect?
My PC acts like a PC
Boot time is important if one boots a lot.
Disabling 50% of the OS can affect the system.
Why are you getting viruses? I haven't.
I disagree with those that believe 8.1 should be compatible with everything. It's not possible.
More often is the case, the desktop programs (Win32) are the cause of all kinds of problems.
Modifications, registry edits, messing with DLL's, rewriting keys, Wow
The OS can really handle all this tinkering
The pagefile gets trashed, and a BSOD happens, buts its the fault of the OS :sarc:

Also, all that compatibility with older machines stuff is holding development of new OS back and makes it much bulkier and slower than optimal. Anyone using older computers should stick to an OS that is from the same era as hardware. I have numerous examples were Win8 works just fine on AMD 754 or Intel 775 platforms and although said computers are inherently much slower, did not find a lot of difference from running on XP. Apart from trouble with drivers there are no other issues that I found.
Even with all that, I find it a bit too presumptuous to expect that all the combinations of hardware and software work together flawlessly.

I think that some things need to be reduced, perhaps when installing it should give an advanced options tab, which allows you to choose what to install with windows, Dependant on your needs. Also the ability to resize desktop icons (Ubuntu already has this)

Hi there.

The OS should be re-branded into 3 different versions (all available at retail - no restriction).

1) Mobile -- for tablets / phones.

2) Consumer - much like it is now including the Metro and touch applications.

3) Business - optimized for desktop use - but still allowing for Touch hardware - sometimes Touch CAN BE useful in a business environment - especially if I'm giving things like power point presentations.

These releases then could be rolled out in their own individual time frames -- any business currently thinking of going from XP==>W8 / W8.1/W8.2 would be TOTALLY BONKERS -- a business can't upgrade an OS every few months = we've just had W8, now there's 8.1 and even rumours (quite strong at this point) of either an 8.2 or a mega upgrade to 8.1.

@CountMike Backward compatibility also really isn't necessary any more - just throw in a DECENT re-vamp of Virtual PC for people who are not used to dealing with Virtual machines - downloading VMWARE PLAYER or VBOX is sometimes a bit scary for a lot of "non technical" people - and provide an application for converting their previous OS into a VM that will run on their new version of windows WITHOUT needing re-activation. Modern hardware will run VM's almost at 95% of Native speed so nobody will notice any real slow down by running as a VM.

Finally :

It won't happen - but I'd love to see that wretched Store thing got rid of too.

@Mir092 - You've had ability to re-size desktop icons since VISTA days --- Go to the desktop and now on your mouse just scroll the wheel while pressing the CTRL key on the keyboard. !!!!!!!

Cheers

Probably not what your looking for but here goes.
I'd like to see Metro Apps remember what monitor they were last opened on and what screen size they were last used at, and open to those on launch instead of full screen.
I'd like an option to disable the Start Screen auto arrange so the tiles don't have to be 2 plus 2 etc. Let me arrange them like you do Icons on your Desktop.
I'd like to be able to span the Metro Start Screen across multiple monitors.
I'd like to be able to change the Tiles background color.
The ability to roll back from an "Upgrade Features" if you can't activate or have other issues after going to Pro or Pro+MC.
Do not automatically create a Homegroup during install, or at least give a yes or no option.
An actual Shutdown tile would be nice. And a tile for the Desktop version of IE.
The ability to easily download install media/ISO file without having to jump though hoops or resort to trickery.

Super easy way to make Shutdown on desktop :
New Shortcut / Target - "%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 00"
Ad appropriate icon and you have it.
For Hybrid Shutdown :
%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -hybrid -f -t 00
For Restart :
%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -R -F -T 00
Those ones could be pinned to taskbar too, also on Start menu. Why MS didn't do that ???

Did that long ago, put them in my Desktop folder. I just Pin to taskbar and pin to start from there on a clean install. I have shortcuts for Single Monitor Only and Extend in there too. I agree, Why MS didn't do that ???

Why MS didn't do that ?

Sorry, I don't get it  (please forgive me  )

After installing 8 for the first time, my mouse flew around the screen and bumped into the charms seconds after arrival to the original default start screen and I instinctively clicked on settings, and there it was. :geek:
I am  that so called Pro Users had to Google to find it.

That's the original one, ever since Alpha version and that's the one people complain about. As you can see, there's more ways they could have made it more obvious and easier to access.

Why all this talk of a power button? If you turn your computer on with a physical power button (switch), why can't you turn it off that way?

Hello HG. I mentioned it as being easier to get to (for most) than creating a virtual machine as suggested by J for installing older systems or systems in a virtual machine (for compatibility).
I never thought the off thingy was hidden or unintuitive

But having said that, it depends on ones power button configuration and the location of the PC. If using a laptop, I guess just close the lid. If your tower is buried somewhere, it might be a little difficult to press a physical button. My 50lb PC box power button is set to sleep, so the only way to shut down is the software button.
My system sleeps all day. I need a rest from posting. :sleepy:

Totally silent. No fans at all.

Excellent list, Kerry. :thumb:

Hopefully all or at least most in 8.2. First and foremost > The ISOs!

I posted that I would like to see a shutdown tile on the Start Screen and that started a side topic. I suffer from chronic pain, neck shoulders and lower back. I'd rather not reach down to press the power button on my tower if I can help it. A tile would be a one click deal versus the hunt and peck to do it from the charms bar. A shutdown tile just seems to me to be at least one tile that would be useful, that's all.

My keyboard has a shutdown button and most MM ones have it too. With some dismay I must conclude that there's more ways to shut down computer than to start it and yet, so many people complain that it is most difficult task.
