It boggles the mind why anybody would chose to do something with just one click when they can do it with three, or four or five.

Just to continue ... there is a theory about Windows that shutting down is a low priority.
In Server, one has to give an explanation as to why you want to shut down .
You can cancel the inquiry, but there it is.

As far as clicks go, they don't bother me (or boggle)
because it might be a typical day that I click thousands a day.

And this is still Windows NT, you know, NT6+,
so standard procedure has always been Ctrl + Alt + Del.

I posted that I would like to see a shutdown tile on the Start Screen and that started a side topic. I suffer from chronic pain, neck shoulders and lower back. I'd rather not reach down to press the power button on my tower if I can help it. A tile would be a one click deal versus the hunt and peck to do it from the charms bar. A shutdown tile just seems to me to be at least one tile that would be useful, that's all.
Ok. I wasnít directing it at any particular member nor was trying to be demeaning or derogatory. I was more or less just stating a fact. I am sensitive to you and others with handicaps. We grew up with a sister that was so. She has since passed on.

I noticed it was in your list. Iíd like to have a tile also. This is a great idea and there should be one by default. Again, perhaps in 8.2.

Although now I see mdmd has one on his Start Screen. Probably pinned that from shortcuts listed prior?

Thatís ok. Again, I wasnít directing it at any particular member. Itís just that this power button issue keeps coming up. What I should have written was ďWhy all this talk of a power button and shortcuts?Ē Iím a keyboader, not a mouser. Iíve tried the shortcuts mentioned and assigned keys to them. Problem is that the shortcut has to sit on the desktop or Taskbar. I donít like clutter there like I had in 7. Thatís one of the things I like about this new system. When commanding with key combo it has to open the desktop to fulfill the command, which is another thing I disliked. Fussy budget I am I know, but I like things a certain way. e.g. I like eggnog in my morning coffee this time of year, not cream.

Another thing is that I donít think it wasnít hidden intentionally or made ďunintuitiveĒ in as much as where they moved it to or placed it. Itís that they put it in a new introduced UI menu > Charms Bar. One of the greatest ideas to come along since sliced bread IMO. I think once learned, one will understand the advantages.

But having said that, it depends on ones power button configuration and the location of the PC. If using a laptop, I guess just close the lid. If your tower is buried somewhere, it might be a little difficult to press a physical button. My 50lb PC box power button is set to sleep, so the only way to shut down is the software button.
Yes, itís about configuration. We all want things our own way. Whatever is easiest individually. I would assume that most people have access to their tower PC physical button.

My system sleeps all day. I need a rest from posting.
Have a nice nap. I think Iím about to take one.

I see. I'll look into that. Does it execute it on the desktop like I mentioned or simply shut down?

Lot's of folks don't get that Windows is Windows NT
and has always traditionally been controlled by Ctrl + Alt + Del

The desktop start menu was essential because people don't know what they are doing.
Geez, server offers an installation without a gui. Just a command prompt.
How many people could handle that?
The Graphical User Interface is necessary for almost everyone.

No problem, I didn't take what you said as demeaning or derogatory. I was just explaining why the thread may have gone of topic.
I just created a shutdown shortcut and put it in my Users/Kerry/Desktop folder. Then I just right click the shortcut and select Pin To Taskbar and Pin To Start. If Sleep or Hybernate is your thing you can customize the shortcut to do those instead of shuting down. Shut Down Shortcut - Create in Windows 8

I'm a retired electronic technician. I modified my tower by adding a momentary push button to the very top most Optical drive bay blank front panel. It is connected to the motherboards power button header. Pressing it will turn the Pc on if its off or turn it off if its on. I can just reach the button with full arm extension saving me from having to lean over. I don't even have to look down to find it.

On my laptop I have the lid close set to Do Nothing, I close the lid when moving from say my back deck to inside or vise versa. I power up with the power button and power down via a shortcut. Different strokes for different folks.
