How about other Electronics Items, like a TV or a CD player - Do those shut off too?

Even with a 6 year old UPS there SHOULD be a USB port on the back, this has to be connected to the computer, and computer should auto-detect the UPS.

So taking the UPS completely out of the conversation, the problem is more accurately described as "Computer shuts down by itself".
    Would that be correct?

Or, are you saying that when you have a line power failure and the UPS seems to be running, the PC shuts down anyway?
Are there any other devices running off of that UPS that also shut down?

If that's the case I'd have to say that the UPS is BROKEN and requires Replacing.

I see that here, several times a year, with my customers, especially with some Brand X UPS.
After having some real problems with Brand X UPS's, I've stopped buying anything but the APC Brand.
They might fail eventually, but will last longer with better service than many of the competitors products.

I have an old APC 600VA UPS, that is now over ten years old and still gives me excellent service, after I replaced the original Gell-Cell batteries, that had failed, with two large car batteries. Run time now, on that UPS, is in excess of 8 hours.
It backs up my 27" TV, cable box, a small desk lamp and even a small 10" personal fan.

I like the APC brand of UPS, because it will work with large, External, Batteries, where some other brands will not. Cyber Power, for instance.

I used to design and build battery backup systems for industrial use. I also ran an APC, UPS repair Depot. So I do have some history with those things.

    Cheers Mates!

Look around, it may be on the side, or semi-hidden. How about other things plugged into the UPS, try those - Plug in and turn on your TV then go shut off main power for that part of your house, if your TV shuts down too, then it's a bad UPS.

If there is absolutely NO USB on the UPS, then it is WAY older than 6 years, thats why I say, it's gotta have one, this is standard. If it is not there, then there is a huge probability that you have a Surge Suppressor Only, and not a UPS. Make sure it IS a UPS.

Prior to USB, UPS devices used COM ports.

Only the more expensive ones had computer monitoring of the UPS, with UPS instigated shutdown of the computer.

I've have several UPS's over the years, with NO connection to the computer. It's an option.

Really? I thought it was pretty standard, every single one I have ever had included this feature.

I've had 3 old Tripplites, an APC and this newer but still old Tripplite. Not to mention I have set up hundreds of them of varying brands.

Any UPS from 6 years ago up, should have it by default. Granted I have never bought any (The ones I had were given to me) but the ones I set up were of various price ranges, from the cheapest ones to the most expensive and they all had it.

If there are UPSs without a USB connection, then it is not a computer UPS, not made for Computer, cos all of the Computer UPSs I have ever seen have a USB port or in cases of older ones, a Comm port.
