Upgrade to 8.1?

  1. #11

As for differences, other than the obviously ability to minimize the Metro stuff, I'm aware of two:

    1. DirectX 11.2 will not run on anything older than 8.1. Probably only of interest to gamers.

    2. Only 8.1 supports CMPXCHG16b, whatever that is.

To me it is obvious that Microsoft has no interest in supporting 8.0 and just wants it to go away. I'm sure internally they are embarrassed by it and want to move on. My plan is to wait a few months until I am convinced my BIOS, Graphics card, and other drivers fully support 8.1. I will then upgrade the drivers to the latest available version and go to 8.1.

What we will be seeing is Microsoft trying again and again, to get a flawed operating system to work. 8.1 8.1.01 8.2 you get my drift. What Windows 8 was and is is a way for Microsoft to sell a new operation system make lots of money, this they have done. Are most users getting any real advantage from this "Great" leap forward from Microsoft? IMHO no.

Lot of replies to fully understand

I will create a small partition and I will install an eval copy of 8.1.

What is still unclear for me is: assuming that I will upgrade, I really have advantages in upgrading now?

Sometimes I think that "Win8.1 is a Win8.0 Service Pack 1"... Can this be considered true?

    Thank you

    Carlo,

In the long run, you would be better off to update to 8.1.

Updating to 8.1 is essentially the same as upgrading an operating system (ex: W7 to W8). It's not just a simple service pack update.

Completely agree with Brink on the upgrade. If you're already running 8 you might as well move to 8.1.

As for driver/software issues - I would advise you check before upgrading. If you find there's something you REALLY need that doesn't work under 8.1, either wait for a fix/update, or find another solution. And to be honest this was no different than any other OS release. In other words, XP-Win 7 had the same issues, and did Win 7 to 8.

Anyway if the software vendor is worth anything, they should update their software/drivers accordingly.

    Peace

My upgrade went on flawlessly and am glad I upgraded even though the new features are not really used by me.

I agree. Create a system image then install 8.1. If you don't like it you can always restore the image.
