Solved first questions about windows 8

Greetings
As a complete to windows 8 (a couple of days) I wonder about the following things:
1) How do I overcome the dreadful association process.
e.g. I'd like jpg to be opened by Irfan Viewer. Instead I get a list of windows programs I don't want.
second example: I want pdf to be opened by Foxit Reader and they don't because I can only run Foxit Reader as Administrator. (I am administrator and a single profile on my laptop, only trouble is I'm not called administrator)
2) what are windows essentials? do I really need them? can I remove without causing harm to my laptop?
3) what is Microsoft Account? do I have to register? (My laptop is a Dell that came with legitimate and activated windows 8)
I'm waiting impatiently for David Karp's Windows 8 Annoyances which helped me, along with sevenforums.com, with my desktop windows 7 PC...
Many thanks

Hello Zivshosh, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Q1) You should be able to use either "Open with" or Default Programs to change the default program to open .jpf files to any program you want as long as that program supports opening .jpg files.

Q2) Windows Essentials 2012 used to be called "Windows Live Essentials". They are just a suite of free programs. If you don't use them, then you could safely choose to uninstall one or all of them.

Q3) A Microsoft account allows you to sign in to Windows 8/8.1 with an email address. A Microsoft account is needed to be able to install apps from the Store and open apps that use Microsoft services. A Microsoft account is like a roaming account since it will also allow you to sync all of your personal settings on any Windows 8/8.1 PC that you sign in to with the same Microsoft account.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

many thanks for your quick reply.
it helped.

Hello Zivshosh, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Q1) You should be able to use either "Open with" or Default Programs to change the default program to open .jpf files to any program you want as long as that program supports opening .jpg files.
>>> Tried that but it didn't work until I upgraded to 8.1
>>> now it partially solved but not for all applications:
>>> couldn't find word viewer and powerpoint viewer for windows 8. Those I installed do not work (but they work >>> fine in windows 7)

>>> I have troubles with opening pdf files with Foxit Reader (supposed to work on windows 8), with audio files >>> that I try to play with foobar2000.
>>> and I can't run regedit.exe or control.exe
>>> maybe installing "take ownership" (from annoyances.org) will solve the last two problems
>>> thanks

Q2) Windows Essentials 2012 used to be called "Windows Live Essentials". They are just a suite of free programs. If you don't use them, then you could safely choose to uninstall one or all of them.>>> downloaded this pack and I don't regret!

Q3) A Microsoft account allows you to sign in to Windows 8/8.1 with an email address. A Microsoft account is needed to be able to install apps from the Store and open apps that use Microsoft services. A Microsoft account is like a roaming account since it will also allow you to sync all of your personal settings on any Windows 8/8.1 PC that you sign in to with the same Microsoft account.
>>> signed to Microsoft account so that I could upgrade to 8.1

thanks for your quick reply.
If I manage to solve the aforementioned problems I still have, I will report in this forum.

Hope this helps, :)

Were you able to set the programs as the default program from within the program's own settings?

How are you trying to open these files? For example, directly on desktop or in an email or browser?

of course I did, and it was listed in the default programs (control panel),
and it solved the problem for images and video, but not for audio or pdf.
I work with Microsoft products since the days of Dos 3.3 (1985) and I never had problems including windows 7 (on my desktop pc)
I simply don't know what to do. What kills me is that I cannot run regedit.exe and control.exe even though I am a sole profile and administrator.
I wish there was a way to lower security and let me be the watchdog. I'm old enough to handle windows or user folders without harming my pc.
thanks for your help.

For now, go ahead and run a SFC /SCANNOW command to see if finds any corrupted system files and able to fix them.

I get the 0x000007b error
from what I understand it indicates that some dll were changed but I can run regedit as an administrator
I don't understand I have to stress that I run as administrtor being a sole user and adminstrator

it is strange that I have no problems running, say, regedit as administrator (meaning as I understand it that my dll's are ok)
Does anyone know if running as adminitrator ia a switch
e.g. regedit /a or regedit /admin?
thanks

I can run sfc as administrator but it only opens cmd screen and closes since I cannot insert any switched unless there is a switch for running as administrator like: sfc /a or sfc /admin, then I can write a batch file (I still use them...)
thanks

As a test, add a new administrator account, and see if you have any of these issues while signed in to that account.

I just did. It didn't change the my essential problems. I still can't run cmd, regedit, control etc (though I took ownership of c:\windows) but it did an unbelievable miracle that I didn't think it was possible: I was able to change the interface language!
for that I thank you very much. It means a lot to me.

solution:
everything that happened to me is my fault naturally.
I ran too quickly with this new laptop and OS and installed a file manager first (Total Commander) but I installed a quick & dirty portable version. After removing this installation and installing the full and legal x64 version, everything works.
I can associate whatever I want, run every program without any mention of administrator etc.
conclusions:
1) portable versions must be installed correctly or not at all
2) taking ownership of c:\windows helped
3) most helpful was the advice I got from Brink to open another administrator account
but this time it was a standard account and after it worked I removed Microsoft account.
I am ready to live without Microsoft applications (free or bought). I get Windows updates and that's enough.
Thanks for everything.

Now I have problem of Catalyst error message and how to boot from a CD but I guess it's not the right forum.

Catalyst errors are usually associated with .NET , you have to check which .Net version your driver reqires and if it is installed.

Not really related to your problems but if you wish to connect to Internet then I strongly advise working under a limited user account and not your administrator one. Even with UAC at max, an administrator's account isn't recommended for daily use. While it can be annoying at first because of the elevation pop-ups (and the need to enter your password) during the setup phase, it becomes much better after all your programs are installed.

Hello oneeyed,

While it would be safer to use a standard account for daily use, there's nothing wrong with using an administrator account for daily use as long as you have your UAC settings set to at least the default or top level.

You just don't want to use the built-in elevated "Administrator" account for daily use since anything that runs in it would be unrestricted as well. :)
