    first questions about windows 8

    Greetings
As a complete to windows 8 (a couple of days) I wonder about the following things:
    1) How do I overcome the dreadful association process.
e.g. I'd like jpg to be opened by Irfan Viewer. Instead I get a list of windows programs I don't want.
second example: I want pdf to be opened by Foxit Reader and they don't because I can only run Foxit Reader as Administrator. (I am administrator and a single profile on my laptop, only trouble is I'm not called administrator)
    2) what are windows essentials? do I really need them? can I remove without causing harm to my laptop?
    3) what is Microsoft Account? do I have to register? (My laptop is a Dell that came with legitimate and activated windows 8)
I'm waiting impatiently for David Karp's Windows 8 Annoyances which helped me, along with sevenforums.com, with my desktop windows 7 PC...
    Many thanks

Hello Zivshosh, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Q1) You should be able to use either "Open with" or Default Programs to change the default program to open .jpf files to any program you want as long as that program supports opening .jpg files.

Q2) Windows Essentials 2012 used to be called "Windows Live Essentials". They are just a suite of free programs. If you don't use them, then you could safely choose to uninstall one or all of them.

Q3) A Microsoft account allows you to sign in to Windows 8/8.1 with an email address. A Microsoft account is needed to be able to install apps from the Store and open apps that use Microsoft services. A Microsoft account is like a roaming account since it will also allow you to sync all of your personal settings on any Windows 8/8.1 PC that you sign in to with the same Microsoft account.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

You can also set file associations in IrfanView :

    1---

    2---

    >>> Tried that but it didn't work until I upgraded to 8.1
    >>> now it partially solved but not for all applications:
    >>> couldn't find word viewer and powerpoint viewer for windows 8. Those I installed do not work (but they work >>> fine in windows 7)

    >>> I have troubles with opening pdf files with Foxit Reader (supposed to work on windows 8), with audio files >>> that I try to play with foobar2000.
    >>> and I can't run regedit.exe or control.exe
    >>> maybe installing "take ownership" (from annoyances.org) will solve the last two problems
    >>> thanks

    thanks for your quick reply.
If I manage to solve the aforementioned problems I still have, I will report in this forum.

    Hope this helps,

Were you able to set the programs as the default program from within the program's own settings?

How are you trying to open these files? For example, directly on desktop or in an email or browser?

of course I did, and it was listed in the default programs (control panel),
and it solved the problem for images and video, but not for audio or pdf.
I work with Microsoft products since the days of Dos 3.3 (1985) and I never had problems including windows 7 (on my desktop pc)
I simply don't know what to do. What kills me is that I cannot run regedit.exe and control.exe even though I am a sole profile and administrator.
I wish there was a way to lower security and let me be the watchdog. I'm old enough to handle windows or user folders without harming my pc.
    thanks for your help.

What happens when you try to run regedit.exe and control.exe? If you get an error message, then what's the full message?

For now, go ahead and run a SFC /SCANNOW command to see if finds any corrupted system files and able to fix them.

    I get the 0x000007b error
from what I understand it indicates that some dll were changed but I can run regedit as an administrator
I don't understand I have to stress that I run as administrtor being a sole user and adminstrator
