I upgraded from windows 7 a few months ago to windows 8. All was going great and I was happy with it. Having a desktop like before for the wife and a new windows one for me. Anyway I went on to download 8.1. This ran ok but took almost 5 hours to download and set up even on my broadband running at 14 Mbs. Anyway all was doing ok until the last group of updates from Microsoft. I could not use IE and other programs in the computer just would not load. I could get onto my home page but that was it. No links would work, my email could not be got at. I uninstalled the updates and still the computer was not right. In the end I used system restore to a date before updates and that went well making the computer usable again. That was till them updates got back in. In the end I have had to use the system disc and clean out the computer and put windows 8 back in totally. I have now knocked the automatic updates on the head opting for them to be downloaded but not installed till I make sure that 8.1 is not in there. I cannot go back to windows 7 which I would like to after all this messing about. Windows 8 is good but that's where is will stop at praising it.

I agree with you I also wish today I had never installed Win8 and today really wish had not done the 8.1 IMHO degrade of the already flawed windows operating system. Right off with Win8 from Win7 my year old programs like Roxie Video Pro. could not be installed, also my Sony programs could not be installed. But some really old programs installed with WinXD they could be installed. Now with Win8.1 WiFi router a brand new Netgear Night Hawk has to be reconnected each time system is started. Also all other Win7 systems I have will connect to my new Canon G16 WiFi camera, Win8.1 won't connect does not find my camera. So Microsoft again like many past failed operating systems, you have failed your system users.

Don't you have a recovery partition so you can reset it to factory settings ?

I don't think there is any way of returning to Win7,unless one has a Win7 OS Disk, and does a clean install.

You can not use a OEM manufacturer's Recovery Partition on a PC updated to Windows 8.1.

You need to use the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD/USB disk/'s.

This morning I started the Win8.1 computer and the router was connected and working. I also found the Canon G16 had been found yesterday, but it was not shown yesterday as being found. But it still will not connect to my G16, just can't connect to it. so again Win8.1 is failing to work as the Win7 systems do.

I know already that this is of no real help, once you're in trouble, but for someone who's NOT yet in trouble with 8.1......

A very good friend was running Windows 7 on his laptop and it was running well, with many programs he had installed, but he wanted to try Windows 8.1. So being not only his friend, but his Computer Tech as well, I gave him my best advise and here it is.

Buy another hard drive! Remove your Windows 7 drive from the laptop and put it in a safe place and install the new hard drive in the laptop. Then install Windows 8.1, and if it runs well, then keep it, and if it doesn't, then clone your old Windows 7 HD to the newer, bigger and faster hard drive you just bought. (the new drive is a 1TB, 7200 rpm drive)

Well, he took my advise and did what I said, and today he's running W-8.1, and is a very happy camper. It's always better to be SAFE and not Sorry! Eh?

Never trash your old OS, in favor of a new one, that might not work well for you.

Cheers Mates!

I will download this Canon software update along with what Microsoft is also requiring, and we will see what it helps.

Seems the download did nothing to help connect the G16 to computer running Win8.1 just glad I have other systems running Win7 that do connect my Canon G16.:D

[DEL]How is the Canon G16 connected? USB or Wireless?[/DEL]

Never mind, bad question. I thought the G16 was a printer!

A lot of good replies there. A few points to think about. I do have the windows 7 disc but I am just going to wait for a while. I will NOT be doing the 8.1 update. Last night I did the updates for windows 8 and there were 57 all told. Its running ok at moment so I am now looking around for some free to use programs to burn my music to discs. Luckily after the main hard drive was formatted when I put windows 8 back in I found my backup discs containing all my photos, music and documents. Some documents I had not backed up since before doing the update so I have lost them. I downloaded a free program to see if it could find any that was left intact on the hard drive. It found lots but nearly all were unrecoverable. Still there are a lot of lessons to be learnt here and the main one is TO BACK UP EVERYTHING on a regular basis. This is what I am going to do from now on.
