How to display Windows 8 mouse pointer by default

    Hi All,

After many previous issues were solved by Google hits to this forum I thought I'd come looking here for answers to the latest .

I'm using a Windows 8 64-bit ASUS VivoBook S200E as home media centre. The player is MPC-HC and the Bluetooth remote uses mouse movements and keypresses to browse the playlist and control playback. It's working very nicely, except for one problem - the mouse pointer is never visible! The only way to activate it is by making gestures with the touchpad (or with a mouse). That means getting up which isn't what remotes are all about . The computer has a touch screen, but that isn't used and doesn't affect the mouse pointer anyway.

I've been told that this behaviour is a Windows 8 "feature" for touch screen devices - the device being in touch mode by default and not displaying the mouse pointer until pointer movement is detected. I've tried all settings I could think of but nothing so far has changed this behaviour. Just to be clear, we're not talking about "hide mouse while typing" kind of behaviour. In this case, when the machine boots up there is no cursor, and it remains invisible for ever, unless you move a touchpad or mouse.

Is there some setting or registry value I could modify to change this behaviour?

Alternatively, is there some script I could use to just jiggle the mouse at startup? I've used Windows Scripting Host for things like this before, but the SendKeys method seems not to support mouse control.

Any other suggestions for fixing this problem will be appreciated too. If it can be avoided I'd prefer not to download and install additional tools.

I'm holding thumbs! Many thanks in advance,
    Francois

You mean your system shows no Mouse AT ALL, unless you move the mouse around?

Open your Control Panel Mouse Options, and there should be an option to Locate the Mouse by pressing the CTRL button. Then at least yo can press CTRL on the remote and it should show you where the mouse is.

If you had an iPhone, I would be telling you to install Mobile Mouse, and you install the server into the PC. Using that, you can move the mouse remotely with an iPhone.

There is another, there's a Windows 8 Mouse, it's just called "WiFiSend" by Benzle, and it wakes up better than Mobile Mouse plus it is made for Windows 8.

How if you tried shutting off the Touch Screen totally?

    That's right.

That helps somewhat by locating the pointer. Some elements also generate tooltips, but as you can imagine this approach isn't ideal.

I'm loathe to add utility clutter for such a trivial issue, frustrating as it may be. I am currently having a look at Move Mouse, though.

I had high hopes for that, but no luck. By process of elimination I identified and turned it off in Device Manager - it's unimaginatively called "USB Composite Device".

Thanks for your suggestions. Any other ideas?

Move mouse... You mean Mousemove? That may work.

What I don't get is why the mouse should be invisible - check any system drivers, there should be additional software for the touchpad and there may be something in there. If you let me know what kind of system it is I can look up the manual.

This seems to be intended Windows behaviour. A developer told me
I found one forum post with a developer trying to get around this issue. After further investigation he found that the Windows GetCursorInfo function was returning the CURSOR_SUPPRESSED flag. After reading the documentation it appears this condition was introduced with Windows 8 and the documentation is as follows: Windows 8: The cursor is suppressed. This flag indicates that the system is not drawing the cursor because the user is providing input through touch or pen instead of the mouse. Unfortunately he could not find any solution to the problem.

It's an ASUS VivoBook S200E (X202EP). I hope you have better luck than me, as is the current rage the "user manual" I found makes it all look simple and easy but actually tells you almost nothing .

Just an update - Move Mouse does the trick!

I still would like to go looking for Windows settings in the Registry, and the developer of the remote control software (Vectir) also has some tricks up his sleeve. But at least there is a solution to this already . Thanks for the inputs.

PS. I'll post back if anything comes of registry settings and/or Vectir modifications.

Ah - So that program moves the mouse after a certain amount of Inactivity? Yah, thats what you need. You could try the other things I mention only if you have a Droid or iPhone.

The registry value in question is:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
    "EnableCursorSuppression"=dword:00000001

Vectir has also found a fix which is being implemented.
