    Thanks for your help
I meant to say "Did you Register the Software (Microsoft Windows 8 [although it often works like a puzzle game]).

All I do is reboot, and Windows 8 asks me every time If I want to update to Windows 8.1

I give it the middle finger back for wasting my time.

Why would I update to something that wrecks my DVD set from working to Repair/Refresh my PC (the additional crime Microsoft keep secret about)?

Turns out the upgrade to Windows 8.1 isn't a single download, but a series of 5 updates. They finally each appeared, and I was able to perform the update and am now running 8.1 again! Thanks for the help - I consider this issue closed.

If its an upgrade, all programs still installed, I'll do it. If its a refresh probably not (yes it keeps the installed apps but that's not any help.) If its a complete reinstall, no way. Anyone know what the plan is?
Once you have upgraded Win XP, Vista or 7 to Win 8, you need to be able to start, recover or re-install Win 8 with a recovery disk or original installation disk, preferably a disk that will boot the computer despite the fact that the Windows operating system has been knocked out.
