Can't Delete Files Because They're in Use -- NOT

I have this problem all the time. I try to delete a file that is not open and get the message in this screen capture. Usually (but not always) I can reboot and delete. What causes this and how can I prevent it?

    Hello Jim,

You might check to see if the Reader app may be running or suspended in the background with the file still opened in it. The app may not actually be closed.

Switcher - Open in Windows 8

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

You might try tapping F5 to get a refresh. Also I've had similar issues in Explorer if Explorer is open to the file, close explorer, reopen and it deletes. I have this when using usb stick or sd card - if explorer is open to the stick/card and I'm trying to delete a file in another explorer window I get errors.

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I've tried that several times previously and the parent app is not running.

What does F5 do. I'm not familiar with that.

    Jim,

F5 will refresh (reload) the currently active window/desktop.

If you like, you could also use the free Unlocker program to delete these as well when this happens to make it easier.

Try FileAssasin from malwarebytes , unlocks locked files, kills processes that are locking files and deletes them all in one click (if you choose to do it all in one).

In cases like this it is easiest to reboot. That releases all handles.
