Looked thru those earlier, but I do not believe you can copy, paste, and drag and drop files from linux into windows. I know I can do it from linux, but sometimes I need to move files between the either os.

AT that link:
Ext2 IFS provides Windows NT4.0/2000/XP/2003/Vista with full access to Linux Ext2 volumes (read access and write access). It installs a pure kernel mode file system driver Ext2fs.sys, which actually extends the Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista operating system to include the Ext2 file system.

Ext2 volumes get drive letters. Files, and directories of an Ext2 volume appear in file dialogs of all applications.

No idea if it will work with Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 though.

currently using btrfs in Fedora 20 Beta, I am not sure if this is compatible with ext2 IFS. Don't know if I will be using btrfs when F20 is released, just experimenting for now.

Hi there
there isn't much out there as yet for windows 8.1 -- When your Linux system is booted you should be able to access Windows via mount - but careful with GPT partitions and large file sizes (windows) - not sure if it will work. Other way round is still problematic with W8.1

What WILL work is if the Linux system is UP at the same time as Windows - won't be in your case because of dual boot - then SAMBA works fine for sharing both ways -- you could have these systems as Virtual machines so you don't need to dual boot.

Chapter 1. How to Install and Test SAMBA

I'd go for the VM option every time -- you rarely need dual boot any more - Virtual Machine software is hugely improved thee days even for Video and 3-D. You can convert your Linux system to a VM easily via VMWARE - VMPLAYER is FREE too.

(If you prefer you could make Windows the VM -- SAMBA still works and the software is the same (VMware).

Cheers

Yea its been a while since using vmware and virtualbox, never used samba, it always gave me a hard time. Also I only have windows 8.1 not pro so I don't have hyperV either. Oh well what should I do. Guess I will start with try virtualbox 1st.

Well it is possible, but it's not clear if you need to mount a linux FS (not advised)
or only access files stored into a *running* linux system (no problem)

Would have preferred to mount, but what the heck I am just goofing around anyway. The thing is I really don't like booting back and forth, depending on my needs. Obviously windows does it all, but linux does not or does not want to. This is my dilemma.

Don't get me wrong, I use and like both, and do not praise or bash either.

One advantage of Linux is it will usually perform pretty well with older hw for use as a server. You don't have to run X. You can run it in console mode. So don't throw your PC away just because it's too slow for the latest Windows. Just network it. If you have room for it somewhere. I remember too from fooling around with Samba there was a command line Samba client where I didn't have to have all Samba bells and whistles working to copy files. It just copied on the command line. Not as cool as D&D but less ripping out of hair. :)

I think what I am going to do is use linux for the most part, and when I need to use windows I will just copy files to windows, prior to rebooting over.

Worked for me for a long time. Although the time I spent in Linux dropped precipitously as new version installed with everything working. I remember it being a bid deal to get a non-MS mouse to work, never mind X=Windows. :)
