Laptop going into standby instead of turning off display

    Hi
I've upgraded to windows 8.1 a few days ago through a custom install as I was running windows 8 x86 and wanted to switch to x64. I've also just updated the BIOS.

After the upgrade though, my laptop goes into sleep/standby and locks the screen instead of turning off the display as I have it set. So, if I edit any power plan settings to turn off the display after 2 minutes, it will go to sleep after 2 minutes. How can I fix that?

You updated a 32 bit OS to a 64? How well did that work?

I have seen that a lot of people who have updated from 8 end up with some kind of corrupted 8.1 image. Try using the DISM restore health command, it's in this tutorial.

As I've mentioned in my previous post, I didn't actually upgrade, but rather did a custom install of 8.1. I downloaded from my DreamSpark account burnt it on a DVD and installed it and then updated my drivers to the 64bit versions as well. My processor is x64-based processor, but when I got my laptop four years ago, it had Vista 32bit installed and I kept upgrading to 7 and 8 32bit.
I'm running the DISM tool now to check for any corruption but I don't really think it's gonna detect any.

Other than the problem mentioned, the only other thing is that most of the time, it shows that it's on battery when the adapter is connected (so whatever options are there for the battery in the power plan, they start working) but it does charge or operate on AC if it's fully charged.

EDIT: DISM didn't find any problems

The system may want a 32 bit OS, it if came with Vista on it - My old Dell Laptop had the original Core Duo that was 32-bit only, so I wasn't ever able to stick any 64 bit OSes into it.

It's probably driver problems cos the system originally had 32 bit drivers in it, there may not be real 64 bit drivers for it for Windows 8.1. I'd have to know what it is, so I can look up the specs and take a look at the drivers they have.

It did come with a 32bit Vista, but as I've mentioned above, the CPU is 64bit based and that's why I switched to 64. Of course, I had to update the drivers to the 64 versions. My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6-1199ee and HP's website only lists drivers up to windows 7, but the 32 bit versions were working fine on windows 8, so 64 should do too, I assumed.
