How to do a backslash in dos on boot to W8 install disk

Hi

when booting to the W8 install disk and going to the dos prompt, my backslash come out as a #, I have tried
different keyboards in the first screen but nothing helps so far.

Apparently it depends on the keyboard configuration in the dos program, how can i find out what that is, or how else can I fix this problem.

All help appreciated.

It may be what they call a "code page." I never got involved with them as I just programed for English Language flavors of Dos and Windows. You might try MS knowledgebase how to set the code page for the command prompt that appears. Or perhaps someone here is familiar with it and will chime in.

You can try holding down the "alt" key on your keyboard then pressing the "9" and "2" keys on the number pad. 92 is the ascii code for the backslash.

Perfect, it worked, I did see that method on a Google search but it did not mention the Number Pad, so I tried the numbers on top of the keyboard which did not work.

I know why it does this, your Install Disk is probably a UK install disk, cos mine is this way too, if not UK, another country. My install disk makes the @ come up as the British sign for "Pounds". I was able to alter the keyboard during install somehow, its been a while so I forgot what I did.

International, yah thats the problem - It has to be Qwerty, you probably have Dvorak.

US international is for Touch Screens.

Do not use SHIFT+F10 but use the procedure below after setting Keyboard and input Method to US:
  1. Click Next
  2. Repair Your PC
  3. Trouble Shooting
  4. Advanced
  5. Command Prompt

This should fix it.

I have three PC's and a Laptop, all have US International and QWERTY keyboards,
US International also comes in a DVORAK config I think.

Ok that's all that matters. My Language was US English, but the Input Language was UK International, I found a bunch of US keyboards, the one I used was US Qwerty. It says "International for Touch Screens" on the International Entry, don't know if that has changed in 8.1
