I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro and after activation the Windows edition is not showing up. It doesn't effect the performance of the computer, but it bugs the crap out of me. Is there any way to fix it so it will show the Windows edition again?

Check this registry key:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName ==== Windows 8.1 Pro

If it's not set to that, change it.

Open an elevated command prompt, input "slmgr.vbs /dlv" (without quotes) and see what response you get:

Check this registry key:

I opened regedit and navigating got to "CurrentVersion" and there is no "ProductName" there. I don't have the value "ProductName" in my registry.

Open an elevated command prompt, input "slmgr.vbs /dlv" (without quotes) and see what response you get:

It shows that same thing, "Windows(R), Professional edition."

Yes but how about the rest of the view? How about giving us the information from my highlighted boxes in red?

Yes, I can see that. So, it just might be what Ztrucker thought initially:

So, here are the registry locations where that information should appear:

Screenshot (52).png

If they are absent, then you will most likely have to add them manually. If you know how to do this, then great; however, if you need assistance in doing so, I'll ask you to work with Ztrucker directly, because it was his discovery and he deserves the credit here, and I'm sure he'll get you through the "how to" procedure.

Good luck.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
Right click on CurrentVersion and select New then String Value.
Call it ProductName
Double click on it and set it's value to Windows 8.1 Pro

Repeat for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Hi there
forget those Geeky registry "thingeys".

Easy way

Create a one line text file with anything in it and save it as test.nfo (with file type *.*).
Now double click it - ignore message invalid system info file - 2nd screen will show your system.

(I can't remember the actual command - but this method of creating a dummy .nfo file works !!!).

"Seemples".

Cheers
jimbo

Works great Jimbo, thanks.

Edit: Get the same result without having to do this by entering msinfo32 from a Run box.

Hi, I have the same problem. I checked in the registry and "Windows 8.1 Pro" was present in both the places. Also by using msinfo32, My OS column is just "Microsoft". Any help would be greatly appreciated.:thumb:

I use the .nfo file thingy and to save the data I use File, Export and .txt for the type, not the Save and .nfo format. Same choices exist for the msinfo32 info. Main reason for the .txt format is not having to worry about how to open it.
