Windows 8 freezes when right clicking on Defrag.

My computer freezes when I right click on Defrag from the search menu. When trying to open it, nothing happens. I am able to get to defrag from the control panel.

Set it on a daily schedule, for instance after midnight every night. That way it will keep your drives relatively optimized.

You mean, Defrag from the Search in the Charms bar? Is that the only thing that crashes or does anything else crash in a search?

I also find defrag does nothing - the CMD window flashes for a second and disappears. "Defragment and Optimise Drives" work though. It seems perhaps defrag.exe is deprecated and now dfrgui.exe is used?

Yes, that's the only one that crashes.

Well, Windows Vista/7/8 defrag does nto show you the process like XP would. It is still doing it though, unless you tell it to stop.

It should show a little bit of progress in it's shell, but I've always set it to optimize on a schedule, that way every day it's all set, all drives. I have 5 drives on this PC, and 4 on my other, they are all at 0% frag. But on this PC, I use Perfect Disk Pro.

I didn't mean that I needed to do a defrag. My computer freezes if I right click it in the search menu. Sorry if that's a bit vague.

If I were to right click on Defrag here, my computer would freeze and I would have to manually power it off with the power button.

I understood that, I've been trying to come up with something...

I don't know why only "Defrag" would do it, I wish we could simply restore the Defrag.exe file from the install disk like we used to in XP.

    64 bit Windows 8?

Ok, I think I got it, you are trying to run "Defrag.exe" which is a DOS program. You need to search for

    "Dfrgui.exe"

And that is the one that runs in Windows.

the other, "Defrag.exe" runs from a command prompt, so you would have to run it from there, or from the Run command. That may be why it is crashing the OS.

I'm going to do a little test... No, it didn't freeze. Try other Command Line programs.

If this is the system, then we have to start with an SFC /scannow, if that doesn't help it, a DISM restore health command.

Here is the tutorial for the DISM command.

Yah I think I see, it's not running the Dos command, it's crashing calling up the GUI. So the Component Store has to be fixed.

That DISM seems to work, where SFC used to work in XP through 7.
