Win 8.1 (first) Boot issues after upgrade

Hi guys!

I am a happy Lenovo U430 Touch owner (i5 Haswell + Geforce 730 + SSD 256Gb + 8Gb RAM). It came with Windows 8.0 (64-bit) and worked flawlessly. A couple of weeks after that came the Windows 8.1 update.... and then the problems started!!!

1) After the Win 8.1 update download, I had an error and it didn´t install. SOLVED! (I downloaded the update 8.1 drivers from Lenovo, installed, then again the update and went good) --> STUPID thing, why won´t the drivers from 8.0 work, and why a code instead of saying which drivers are the problem???

2) After the Win 8.1 update I had the famous "Secure Boot not configured" Watermark. SOLVED! (Went to the BIOS, cleared the Secure Boot keys -the last 2 options- and then rebooted the PC. Watermark is gone)

MY PRESENT PROBLEM:

Everytime I completely turn off my computer, the FIRST TIME I turn it on Windows WON´T boot. It just says "LENOVO" and stays there. Then if I turn again OFF and then ON (second time) it boots well. (just before the update to 8.1, with Windows 8.0 I had zero problems.)

Why only at the second "power on" will the Windows boot??? How can I fix it?

Thank you all guys.

What I notice:
- By "standard" Windows 8.1 Shutdown I have this problem.
- By "Start Menu 8" Shutdown... usually I do not have this issue! Aren´t both the same?

Messures that did *not* solve the problem:
- I already cleared (again) the SecureBoot keys on UEFI
- I already used CCleaner to clean files, boot cache, etc
- I deleted the hibernation file and turned it on again. (I still did not have time to test after it).

I don't believe they are the same because when I use the standard Windows 8.1 shutdown, it acts like a full shutdown because I get approximately 50 (or so informational logs) on the next cold boot; whereas, when I use the Start8 shutdown, it acts more like a hybrid-sleep shutdown because I get only about 25 (or so) informational logs and some of them indicate a "wake from sleep" condition.

Just for a test, download this button and place it on your desktop and see if that works like your Start8 shutdown:

OR

You could simply try to disable "fast startup" and see what happens:

Good luck.

Thanks My2cents, for me it is the opposite, Start8 takes longer than from Windows, but it is difficult to know as I have an SSD and both are extremely fast (4-5 sec) and I can´t tell which is faster.

I´ll try this weekend both again to see if it helps. Neverthless "Secureboot" off is not an option, I want to know how to fix it 100%.

I don't believe I ever made reference to that option but I did make reference to "fast startup" which is not the same as secure boot. And, BTW, if you do decide to turn it off for a test, you'll probably only have to wait an extra 2-3 seconds for it to boot. Good luck and thank you for your acknowledgement as well.

One more thing I forgot to mention is that Avast 2014 is causing many 8.1 boot issues, so if you are using it, try uninstalling it, and see if that fixes your issue.

my2cents: you´re right, you never mentioned Secure Boot, I was reading also stuff about it and mixed "Fast Startup" that you talked about :)

I do not have Avast 2014, but NOD32 v6.0 (full updated). I really do not understand why the screen freezes *only* after a big period of time. For example: if I turn the computer OFF now (both standard/Start 8) it boots fine. Otherwise (like a couple of hours, with current totally off) it has this problem...and only with after the Windows 8.1 update. I never liked "big" updates (like SPx or like this one 2-3Gb) because it messes everything up.

Pitty LENOVO does not provide a full Windows 8.1 / ISO...

Slow may eventually lead to a freeze. Give it a go...

my2cents: I already found the source of the problem! IT IS in fact the "fast startup"! When "fast startup" is ON the computer freezes on the "LENOVO" screen and does not continue. I need to restart a second time... When "fast startup" is OFF the computer starts at the first time. Fortunately I have an SSD and Windows loads in 5-6 seconds but that means that the "fast startup" on Windows 8.1 (update) is damaged!

I hope Microsoft fixes it fast... any solution meanwhile?
