Trustworthy Sites

Several days ago, I read about Cryptolocker malware and that it's very hard to get rid of.

Of course, there were several replies to the thread, which is normal. Most likely all of the links in that thread are valid in that we can trust what we find there. However . . .

There have been times I've gone to a site and downloaded stuff that gramma's lye soap won't take off my system! I've learned through experience to be cautious of where I go and what I click on. Not everyone has learned that lesson yet, especially those new to computers.

Which brings me to my question: Do we have a listing of trustworthy sites in these forums? Or, is there a list of sites to avoid at all costs?

to Avoid?

Freeze.con, Software Informer, en.softronic.con, these are the ones that show up the most in Googol. There are hundreds though. ANy site that makes you download what you are looking for in a special DOWNLOADER. Sometimes Cnet does this. It usually contains iLivid of some other such cack. Usually d/l's from Cnet are Ok but if you allow the special downloader to run, it will infect you.

Trustworthy- Softpedia.com, which sometimes has older versions of software that are needed, as well as Oldversions.com.

Basically as a rule, avoid all sites that lave huge lists of software you can download. Cnet is on the border.

I'll add to the lists of Avoid as soon as I remember them all. Always download software trials from the Sites for the company that makes it.

Oh yah, there is a site that offers fixes for various problems - They offer a "Fix" file, but it is a virus. I'll try to find that one, it is insidious.

Possibly best in the security section of the forum, but search Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File in Google and see the first link returned as a good place to start if you wish to help secure your computer against sites that are not trustworthy. The hosts file on your system (whether Windows or Linux) allows you to block unwanted, and especially known malicious connections.

The "downside" of using such hosts files is that many ads do not display on your browsers, and that sites that you visit that rely on advertising revenue will not get any revenue from your visits. You can selectively unblock sites by editing the hosts file.

Thanks, Zwe. I had wondered about Softpedia and haven't gone there when I search with Bing and it shows up. Good to know.

Did you mean .con in the list to avoid? I don't think I've ever seen a site something.con.

At any rate, they're going onto the evil witch list (in appreciation of Haloween). :)

I'll put Softpedia in the good witch list.

I spelled it that way, so the automatic URL thing would not put a link there - I don't want to post links to those places!

Softpedia is generally OK, but you have to know exactly where the actual download link IS.

On Softpedia, there will generally be 3 links right under the software name. The one you want, is the dark blue link with the arrow facing to the right and the word "Download" on it. The green "Download" link is an ad, and there is a "Buy" link underneath, dont use that either, on the page that shows up when you hit the blue Download button, it usually has a link to the dev site.

Filehippo, thats another good one.

Thats great! Thanx for that. the same can apply to any hosting site that has a superfluity of ADS.

LO4D dot CON,

Looks legit, but when you download something, AV program kicks in.

Oh yes - you will need to exclude your hosts file from Windows Defender the instructions are in the Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File Google link.

It also applies to ads in emails and even invisible single pixel links - any such references are just filtered to 127.0.0.1 - here's just part of the hosts file that freezes out freeze.con:

The thing to really watch out for are those ADS that show up in a Google Search, at the top of the real results.

guaranteedvirus.png

Add "Freedownloads.us dot CON" to the list of BAD

Also, look at the ADS on the SIDE: This is why I say, treat them ALL as malicious, not some of them or certain ones, all of them. One of the ads links to Soft32 dot CON.

Amazon.com is OK too. I bought PaperPort 14 through them a couple weeks ago, and it was shipped from a "partner" and everything turned out OK.

Possibly best in the security section of the forum, but search Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File in google and see the first link returned as a good place to start if you wish to help secure your computer against sites that are not trustworthy. The "downside" of using such hosts files is that many ads do not display on your browsers, and that sites that you visit that rely on advertising revenue will not get any revenue from your visits. You can selectively unblock sites by editing the hosts file. Hence the forum blocking out the link to the site Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File.

I found more on this in the Tutorial Index: Hosts File : Use in Windows 7 / Vista - Windows 7 Help Forums
and here: HOSTS File - Add or Remove from Desktop Context Menu - Windows 7 Help Forums

I'm going to print and follow them. Between what you've given me and what's in the Tutorials, I'm pretty sure I can figure it out. :)

Warning: Windows 8 is slightly different to Windows 7 - see here:

(please pardon the LMGTFY - this forum won't let me link directly)
