Oh yes - you will need to exclude your hosts file from Windows Defender the instructions are in the Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File Google link.

It also applies to ads in emails and even invisible single pixel links - any such references are just filtered to 127.0.0.1 - here's just part of the hosts file that freezes out freeze.con:

The thing to really watch out for are those ADS that show up in a Google Search, at the top of the real results.

Add "Freedownloads.us dot CON" to the list of BAD

Also, look at the ADS on the SIDE: This is why I say, treat them ALL as malicious, not some of them or certain ones, all of them. One of the ads links to Soft32 dot CON.

Amazon.com is OK too. I bought PaperPort 14 through them a couple weeks ago, and it was shipped from a "partner" and everything turned out OK.

The hosts file on your system (whether Windows or Linux) allows you to block unwanted, and especially known malicious connections.

The "downside" of using such hosts files is that many ads do not display on your browsers, and that sites that you visit that rely on advertising revenue will not get any revenue from your visits. You can selectively unblock sites by editing the hosts file. Hence the forum blocking out the link to the site Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File.
I found more on this in the Tutorial Index: Hosts File : Use in Windows 7 / Vista - Windows 7 Help Forums
and here: HOSTS File - Add or Remove from Desktop Context Menu - Windows 7 Help Forums

I'm going to print and follow them. Between what you've given me and what's in the Tutorials, I'm pretty sure I can figure it out.
