Solved Keyboard Mute Button Doesn't Work

I have Windows 8.1 Pro and a Logitech K800 Keyboard (wireless/illuminated) and I'm continuing to be frustrated by the fact that the Mute button does not work. Oddly enough, I had the same problem with a previous Windows 8.0 Pro install -- it went away when I upgraded to Windows 8.1. But the problem started again shortly afterward (maybe a week or two). I have the latest drivers and apps installed from Logitech.

After a reboot, the first time I hit the Mute key momentarily mutes the sound but then the sound returns (maybe after 1 second). After that, hitting the Mute key has no effect at all.

I have searched Google for a solution but nothing matches my problem. Oddly there are reports of all volume-related keys not working, but the Volume up and Volume down keys still work for me.

I'm wondering if anyone else is having these problems, and/or if anyone has suggestions.

There should be software for that keyboard. Some Keyboards that have extra keys work without added software, if they are a PS/2 KB. I don't have any USB KB's that have extra keys like that, the one I got is an old HP keyboard.

Check the Logitech site, see if there are drivers for that particular KB.

Try this:

Just guessing here. But do you have windows update to install updates automatically? If so and use the notify me option instead. Maybe incorrect microsoft generic drivers are being installed without you knowing it and causing conflicts with the proper drivers.

Since there is a specific package for that Keyboard, I would start with that before venturing into these other areas. Also, if you do have MS updates running, they MAY have sent you a new driver for the KB, and you know how bad MS is with Drivers, very rarely does one work that gets downloaded via Windows Updates. So you should also try to roll back the Driver for the Device.

Actually, the physical key is fine. It worked after I updated to Windows 8.1 but stopped working after a week or two. It was previously not responding under Windows 8.

Yes, I see in device manager that I have a couple dozen device drivers for Human Interface, including four for keyboards. I'll try to triage those down and see if one of these is the culprit...

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.

You should also check your Audio Drivers, see if they are running in "Exclusive Mode" - It's in the Properties Sheet for your Audio Device, try unchecking the boxes:

It was just a stab in the dark, that particular setting has caused me problems in the past.

Did you try downloading the driver package from the link? Maybe they don't have a driver set for 8.1 yet, in which case keep your eye on that page for updates.

There is a new feature called "Click Delay" that might also be interfering, you can get to it in PC settings, 'Devices and PCs' - Look for your mouse and disable the click delay. Maybe there is even a setting for your Keyboard in there.

As each day goes by, Windows 7 is looking better and better...

My list of gripes with Windows 8, and now Windows 8.1, are getting longer as time goes on:

* Of course, there's my problem with the Mute button not having any effect, first in Windows 8, and then eventually again after upgrading to Windows 8.1. I've never had anything like this problem in Windows 7, or any other version of Windows (including the much-maligned Vista).

* Windows 8.1 does not play well with proxies, requiring an Enable Loopback Utility set up for each new Metro app that is installed. It initially took me weeks (admittedly during W8 Release Candidate testing) to figure out this kludgy solution. I would expect that I'm not the only one that uses proxies and wants to run the occasional "Metro" app. How is that Microsoft did not address this in Windows 8, never mind Windows 8.1?

* I only run a few "Metro" apps in Windows 8.1 and they are frequently misbehaving. I have a Words by Post game (Scrabble variant) that periodically hangs up or only displays some of the letters on the board and my rack. So, not only did Microsoft "break" the Windows desktop, but they tacked on something that works about as well as Windows 2.13.

* I get frequent "Not Responding" messages in the title bars of my Windows desktop apps, including Google Chrome, Evernote and File Explorer. When this happens, the PC is lost in the ether. It almost always clears itself up, but that means waiting around for a minute, sometimes more, for the problem to clear.

I have had these problems in both Windows 8 and 8.1, but never in previous Windows versions.

* It seems that SkyDrive is erratic, if not actually broken. When I first installed Windows 8, it took me a couple of days of futzing around to get syncing working properly. And now that same problem returned over the weekend.

Yesterday afternoon, I restructured the folders in my SkyDrive Picture folder, via the File Explorer on the Win 8.1 desktop, to add separate folders for each my mobile devices (Android phone, Nexus 7 tablets, etc). When I checked for these new folders via my phone and my tablets, there was no sign of them, with the old directory structure remaining in place.

Worse, when I checked SkyDrive via the Metro app, it told me that the files and folders displayed (which was my new Picture folder structure) was my CLOUD storage, when in fact, if I checked my cloud storage through another PC or one of my mobile devices, the old structure was actually in place. SkyDrive Metro does NOT display cloud files, it displays local files.

After several hours messing around trying to get this to work, I give up. Then I wake up this morning, and now the changes have been finally updated to the cloud (just 12 hours after setting them up). Man, the convenience here is awesome, Microsoft.

I'm told that SkyDrive is "more deeply integrated" into Windows 8.1. I would think that this implies that SkyDrive and Windows 8.1 work together more seamlessly, but that would be wrong. Compounding the problem, one of the "benefits" of this enhanced integration is that there are NO CONTROLS for monitoring or troubleshooting SkyDrive problems. There's not even a Notification Area icon available to let me know if SkyDrive is active and/or what it's actually doing at any moment in time. This is an improvement? I think not.

My feelings about Microsoft Windows are actually familiar to me. I went through the same thing with an old version of Outlook (maybe 2003), that was so slow and glitchy that it drove me into the arms of Gmail more than 5 years ago. And I went through similar drip-drip-drip torture with Firefox about a year ago, though I think at least some of those problems may have been unique to FF and W8. Nonetheless, Chrome is now my browser of choice.

There's only so much BS to be tolerated before it comes time to move on. I think that time is very near.

I have to say that I am a very happy Android user, in large part because of the fact that the system is so open and malleable, particularly when using apps and tools such as Tasker and "AutoApps" such as AutoShare, AutoLaunch, and AutoRemote. When I bought my first Android phone roughly 2 years ago, I really wanted to give Windows Phone 7 a shot, but the phone choices at my carrier were abysmal (and really haven't improved much since then).

All of this repeated failure is opening the door to consideration of a new OS entirely. Falling back to Windows 7 (or at least setting it up for Dual Boot) is a no-brainer, but it probably makes sense to consider Linux while I'm at it.

Sorry for the rant -- but things are only getting worse, and it's sometimes difficult to suffer in silence.

That's mostly why I am sticking with Windows 8 in my main systems. I don't like what I am hearing, its not just simple things like that mute button, just take a look at this forum, in the last 3 weeks, this place has been flooded with all kinds of severe problems. I know how to fix 8 and make it go good, but 8.1, its nothing but problems.

Most of us here (except me) have upgraded to 8.1 with no problems, but these new users that are joining, several new users a day, are not saying the same thing.

I think, if you are lucky, you'll get 8.1 installed with no problems, but it is a 50-50 chance. 8.1 is a whole new OS, and a whole new OS was not warranted, a Service Pack could have fixed what was unpopular or bad about 8. It is an OS released way too quickly, and the more I hear, and I hear rantes like yours on a daily basis several times a day. I just havent experienced it yet, I'm ready to install it, but I need a new DVD drive for the system it is going into.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
My beef is with Windows 8, in general, including 8.1.

Windows 7 was the best OS Microsoft ever built. Tacking on the Metro stuff is now looking like a massive cockup. Usually when Microsoft delivers a lemon (Windows 2, Windows ME, Windows Vista), the follow-up (Windows 386, Windows XP, Windows 7) is so much better that it makes everyone forget the previous mess.

But Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are (in my book) bona fide, back-to-back lemons.

Logitech K350 wireless keyboard here on Windows 8.1. All the media keys work just fine even without the SetPoint software installed. I had keyboard and trackball issues after updating to the preview though the Windows Store. Both would intermittently just cut in and out and stop working. No such issues with a clean install though. I have two listings under Keyboards in Device Manager. HID Keyboard Device and Logitech HID-Compliant Unifying keyboard. Same two listings for mice in Device Manager too.

Maybe that is the issue, the Upgrade vs a Clean Install.

Even this Windows 8 system, this one was upgraded from 7, and from a 7 that had Not Net problems. So I inherited those from 7. It works well enough for now, but I'm due for a new Main Hard Drive and Fresh Install soon.

See, this is what bugs me tough, even without special drivers from Logietech, Windows should detect all of the special keys.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I always do clean installs. I haven't attempted an in-place upgrade of Windows since the pre-3.0 days.

This reminds me again why I liked Windows 7 so much. Every previous version of Microsoft Windows would get slower and less reliable as time went on, eventually getting to the point where a clean install was required to get good performance (in my case, every 10 to 12 months).

In the 2 years of so that I used Windows 7, performance never deteriorated and I ended my use of Windows 7 with the original install (with Service Packs added). I thought for sure it was a sign that periodic clean Windows installs would permanently be a thing of the past. Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have pretty much disabused me of such unjustified optimism.

My 7 installations would slow to a crawl, but I accumulate so much junk, I save Everything. I think it is mainly that my drives are filled and I don't have enough Ram. When I first put 8 in here, it was blazing fast, now it is creeping slow. My other system has 3 GB of ram, and plenty of space, and it is faster even with a slower processor.

Maybe the hardware just gets tired. Also, more and more icons appear in my Tray, on this machine it is all related to iTunes which I need for my phone. And my Antivirus. Not enough cores, not enough Ram to accommodate it all.

FYI, I am also using a K800 keyboard for both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 on the same PC without installing any software from Logitech and I do not have any problem as you described, everything work as expected. Perhaps may be your Mute button is flaky.
Can you use a different keyboard to see if it has the same problem ?

PS. Is your keyboard under warranty ? if so, exchange for another one.

I don't believe that the problem is hardware (button). The Mute button stopped working at some point during my use of Windows 8. When I upgraded to Windows 8.1 the Mute button operated normally for a period of a few weeks, and then it stopped working.

I'll look into uninstalling the Logitech software and see if that helps...thanks.
