Solved Unable to edit MP3 properties in Windows 8

I have just recently acquired a brand new laptop running Windows 8, and I'm experiencing an issue with editing the details of MP3 files. I can right-click any MP3 to open its properties and access the Details tab, but when I click on the fields for the different tags, nothing happens.

I don't recall ever having this issue on my previous laptop with Windows Vista, so I'm at loss trying to understand what is going on here. I'm not very tech savvy about the subject of permissions and accessibility, but it doesn't really seem to be related to that. The files are listed under my local user directory.

When I click on a editable field, I can then type into it.

Any chance the mp3 is read only?

ok,i got it now ,
I had to mouse over the field ,[after clicking on it]then i could type in the box,
i don't get all the option struker does in my properties

You can save the file into iTunes and do it too. And Windows Media Player. If you look around, there are bunches of programs that can edit your tags. You can do it in VLC also, but there is a trick to it.

I'll see if I can find something that's easy to use, that gives you full access to ID3v2 and 3 tags.

Well, it seems I somehow managed to confuse my MP3 files with WAV files. The funny thing is that I ran into this like two days in a row, and immediately went into Windows Media Player to edit the tags instead of having a second look at the files. Brainfart, I guess.

Use mp3tag -- FREE , works a treat and you can use it on FLAC and other codecs too --also decent export facilities so you can create a decent search DB or EXCEL spreadsheet of your music / albums / tracks / artists etc etc.

I had to tell people to use that program, I worked for MP3.com from 1998 to 2000, I was what Shawn is, in their tech support forum. When MP3.com was new, there were not many good MP3 encoder programs, Mp3.com used to endorse MusicMatch. But it sucked.

The Problem was, the site required the ID3 tags to be properly put in for the songs to show up correctly in the lists. MP3tag was what I would tell people to use.

I remember the permutations MP3 format went through, there was actually NO good encoders back then, and MusicMatch used XING to encode MP3s, it's the absolute worst engine. I was supposed to endorse MusicMatch but I refused, and I MADE them re-write their FAQ section to include using LAME or WinLAME to encode. That's what I still use, for free floating WAV files. When I am mastering a song, I use the encoder built in to Sound Forge 9.

If you REALLY want to put tags onto WAV files, and you can, you can use Sound Forge. But it is quite a hefty priced program, but I bought it when version 9 was out, and it was well worth it, and the Plugins like Ozone and Waves Gold Collection. But the basic program allows you to tag a WAV file, and even drag an image into it, lyrics, etc. So when you open the WAV file up in a program that can read the tags, it puts all the info in automatically.

You may wanna try Audacity, I'm not sure if you can tag a WAV file with that, but it is free and powerful.
