How to get rid of the word "NEW" in Start screen apps

After showing Administrative tools they are all listed as "NEW"; how can I get rid of that word "NEW". Launching each & every one is not really what I intend to do. Isn't there a registry key for this ?

I don't think so - It should go away after using it once? iOS 6 started this on iOS devices, MS has followed suit.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
The easiest way is to just launch them individually and be done with it. You could also right-click the ones that are informational only (eg, readme text docs, shortcuts to app websites, etc), select open file location, and delete them so they would never reappear again. Playing with the registry is just too dangerous to fix this issue and, BTW, you could have been done already. Cheers and good luck.

NO solution by launching pasted shortcuts.

Who said anything about pasted shortcuts?

The words NEW does not go away after first use?

Grrr.

The executables go away after first use, I then right click and delete the useless informationals and shortcuts as previously described. Less clutter. No "new" anywhere on my Metro:

Yeah, but we (- are -) (or I) am not are referring to your screen. It is listed by Microsoft as a bug. I am not using 8.1 so I don't know if its fixed but it was not in the preview. I use my metroized start menu differently than you do. I paste 300 shortcuts into the ProgramData > ... start menu folder. It works beautifully. Everything I need is available by single key stroke. I do not need a classic start menu.

Yeah; OK. Sorry I didn't get all that from your original post because I'm not an apps guy I guess. Good luck.

Can you show how to set that up?

I got my Tile shortcuts in start8, they show up under "Modern UI Applications" as well as in the Start8. This "New" thing definitely was not in the preview. I like 8 as it is, every day I see 500 new 8.1 problems stays off the time when I'll eventually update.

Where in Program Data do you put all the shortcuts to the Non-Metro apps? The "Start Menu" "folder" is a locked folder... Plus when I looked in there, all of my shortcuts are there. I had a helluva How did you get a link to it on the Start Menu side?

I can but it does not work well with classic style start menus.
If you go to folder options and show hidden files and folders then you should have access to
sm1.jpg

I have a folder on another drive that is always a work in progress. It contains shortcuts to everything I use on the computer including folders. I just select all and copy, then paste to
sm1.jpg

The Start Menu folder looks something like this.

sm2.jpg

It will be listed in a classic menu as a long mess of shortcuts so it does not work well with classic style menus.
From the start screen then, everything in the StartMenu folder is available by alphabetical listing or single key stroke.

A small example:

Oh, I get it, you stick them in the root of the folder, under "Programs"? - I'll try it, see what happens.

if I mess with it too much, it messes up my Start8 Start Menu

I had the same problem. NO solution by launching pasted shortcuts. The new stays permanently.
Would like to see a solution that works to disable all new highlights.

http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/28261-new-highlight-8-1-a.html

I had a problem with the "new" highlight not going away after selecting the app. After hours of troubleshooting, I found that checking the box labeled "Store recently opened programs" in the "Jump Lists" tab of the "Taskbar and Navigation properties" menu allows the "new" highlight to disappear after I open the app.

The "Taskbar and Navigation properties" menu is accessed by right clicking the taskbar on the desktop and selecting "Properties."

iTunes still has a "new" highlight after selecting it, but every other app sheds it.

I hope the same works for you.

Hello benji. Welcome to 8 Forums.

... I hope the same works for you.

Thanks. Yes, it does work. Thanks. Unfortunately, how I was copying and pasting hundreds of shortcuts, including shortcuts to uninstalled programs, >> it still is a problem. I would like a way to turn them all off at once without having to run each shortcut or having to wait a specified length of time.
Microsoft has not posted a solution to this issue.

Image1.jpg

But ... << I am not using Windows 8.1 except as a testing model. My OS is server 2012 which uses the original Windows 8 metro model and does not have this problem and uses IE 10.

:(

I am very interested in 8.1 and will only use Internet Explorer, (my preference),
but IE 11 (in preview and RTM / GA release) has a zoom issue, as far as I am concerned. When snapping the metro IE 11, it should auto resize to the Window, but it zooms incorrectly. It should not retain a set zoom factor inside of a snapped window. Also, in my experience, it mistakenly zooms to over 300% often.
