I have a problem with the Visual Effects in Windows 8 and I hope you can help me.

When i check "Show windows contents while dragging" and then press apply changes saved

then after restarting computer settings returns back and the box is unchecked.

I don't know whether this is caused by software conflicts or something else

Hi all,

I encounter the problem as well.

Scanning the registry, I can find the following:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\DragFullWindows = 1
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DragFullWindows\DefaultApplied = 1
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DragFullWindows\CheckedValue = 1
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DragFullWindows\DefaultValue = 1
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DragFullWindows\UncheckedValue = 0
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\win.ini\Windows\DragFullWindows = "USR:Control Panel\Desktop"
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DragFullWindows\CheckedValue = 1
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DragFullWindows\DefaultValue = 1
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DragFullWindows\UncheckedValue = 0
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\win.ini\Windows\DragFullWindows = "USR:Control Panel\Desktop"
- HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\DragFullWindows = 1
- HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Control Panel\Desktop\DragFullWindows = 1
- HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Control Panel\Desktop\DragFullWindows = 1
- HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Control Panel\Desktop\DragFullWindows = 1
- HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-640145101-3638596770-251754213-1001\Control Panel\Desktop\DragFullWindows = 1
- HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-640145101-3638596770-251754213-1001\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DragFullWindows\DefaultApplied = 1
- HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-640145101-3638596770-251754213-1002\Control Panel\Desktop\DragFullWindows = 1
- HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-640145101-3638596770-251754213-1002\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\DragFullWindows\DefaultApplied = 1

Furthermore, in Control Panel / System and Safety / System / Advanced System Parameters / Performance ("Parameters" button), I selected "Adjust to obtain best appearance", which results in ticking all checkboxes.

However, repeatedly on each boot and even on each session restart, (except some rare "lucky" boots) the system "forgets" to take the "Show windows contents while dragging" option into account, though it is ticked. I have to select "Adjust to obtain best performance", then back "Adjust to obtain best appearance", then click either "Apply" or "OK" to have DragFullWindows actually working. I found no solution so far. Puzzling, isn't it?

Thanks a lot to anybody having a solution :)

Hi Brink,

I just create an account, checked the registry settings and advanced parameters as well. Unfortunately it doesn't work better. Even after restarting my PC, logging with the new account, I still have to change parameters back and forth as described above to have an effective DragFullWindows functionality :confused:

Thanks anyway for your quick reply.

My sync settings are off by default since I just reverted to a local account (like I had with Windows 8 before upgrading to 8.1). Therefore, I get a message so that some Windows functionalities are available only if I use a Microsoft account.

However, the problem remains... I just rebooted in order to write on a factual basis.

By the way I found helpful tips to revert to a local account via the appropriate Eight Forums topic: "Local Account - Switch to in Windows 8". Thanks!

Could it be something as simple as not pushing"OK", "Apply " is only per session setting and would return after restart.

Hi,

I bought my laptop on 22nd Aug 2013 (W8) and encountered the problem immediately. When I upgraded to W8.1 on 17th Oct, I hoped it would solve the issue. No improvement unfortunately. Same when I installed W8.1 Update 1 (8th Apr).

Sometimes (very seldom indeed) I'm surprised to notice DragFullWindows is OK... it already happened under W8 but in most cases it goes wrong. I don't think it's better or worse since I upgraded to W8.1 then to Update 1.

I'm not joined to a domain, I'm using my personal laptop at home. No locked admin params force the PC to revert to an inactive DragFullWindows parameter.

To CountMike: I checked with both "OK" and "Apply", same result: "Show window contents while dragging" is already ticked when I open the settings window, though is looks inactive when I move a windows (only an empty frame is visible while dragging, then the window is visible again after dropping). The actual action I'm obliged to perform is: switch from "Adjust to obtain best appearance" to "Adjust to obtain best performance" (clears all ticks), then back to "Adjust to obtain best appearance" (sets all ticks), then validate the form. Next window draggings are OK. Whether clicking on "OK" or on "Apply", setting effectivity is lost when I close and reopen my session, though the corresponding tick remains displayed. In the past I tried alternate methods such as clearing then setting the single "Show window contents while dragging" tick, unfortunately with no more efficiency.

There is a simple and effective solution to this problem. I found this while studying the softwares mobile partner and netgear aircard using sysinternal's process manager. It works perfectly. Hopefully will help all those who like to see the full windows while dragging.

In Notepad type the following lines :

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"DragFullWindows"="1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop]
"DragFullWindows"="1"

Save the file as “Show Window Contents.reg” Double clicking this file and restarting will cure the problem permanently. Post a message if you find this useful.

Hi aravindban,

Very surprisingly some days ago I noticed the "drag full windows" functionality was working fine... without having to untick then retick any checkbox.
I cross my fingers...
Was the problem due to a specific driver, which then was updated? I don't know.
Anyway now everything goes right, I'm happy :)

The 1st key was already set:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"DragFullWindows"="1"

However I created the other one
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop]
"DragFullWindows"="1"

I'm now going to restart my computer, hoping the problem is fixed forever.

Regards.

Hi BM57,
Thanks for the reply. The two software that were causing this problem in my system were data card drivers Mobile Partner and Netgear Aircard. I looked at the registry activity caused by Netgear Aircard using sysinternal's process manager. I found that the key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop]"DragFullWindows"="1" was being looked for but was not found. Registry check showed that the key did not exist. So I created it and found that the problem was permanently cured not only for Netgear Aircard but also for Mobile Partner. Please give this solution some publicity because Mobile partner is a widely used driver for Huawei dongles.
Regards
