If the Win8 Product Key I have is no good what can I do

Hi again I'm sorry guys, I am very confused about all this. Maybe I should complain to Dell? The Windows 8 Product Key was obtained by using Belarc Ad-visor. I cannot find any other Key.

So I don't know what to do now" how can MS refuse to accept my Win8 Product Key, just because it was installed on the Computer by Dell? I still paid for it. I have the Product Key

I am too afraid to proceed either way. If I install the Win 8.1 upgrade' and try and use my Win8 Product key just to activate it' like you suggest" what will happen if it rejects it??
Is it illegal to male a Backup Re-bootable USB drive?

Can you go through what you think I should do" step by step - in little steps please?
Also where do I find Post #16 Cheers and thanks to all of you Dasha

    Hi Dasha,

Since you are in a special situation with an OEM product, I can't really guide you but alphanumeric seems to know more about this method, so maybe he (or someone else) can help you with your specific setup.
    Good luck.

PS - Have you investigated the Dell website for a "how to upgrade to Win 8.1 tutorial" because that might fill in the missing pieces relative to your OEM product key.

Well here's the deal as I see it.
Official unmodified Microsoft Windows 8.0 install media will read and use your Windows 8.0 embedded key during installation.
Official unmodified Microsoft Windows 8.1 install media won't use your Windows 8.0 embedded key during installation. It will only accept a Windows 8.1 key for installation.
There are leaked Windows 8.1 install keys you can use to install but they will not let you activate. You can use a Windows 8.0 key to activate 8.1. I do believe those keys can be OEM or Retail.
Those that don't have install media have been using this work around to get it. https://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...ad-create.html
I believe you tried that and found it wouldn't accept your key. That is because Microsoft for some reason blocked OEM keys, only Retail keys work for the download part.
I think you can activate with an OEM key, you just can't download with it. I'll have to do some rereading of some threads to confirm that. There was a lengthy thread when the RTM was leaked and I'm almost positive people activated with OEM keys for that release. It isn't going to matter all that much if you can't download the ISO though.

This is a real problem as nobody seems to know a way around it? I feel that Legally everybody with a Retail Version of Win8 OR an OEM Version should be able to use their Win8 Product Key to update to Win8.1' I have have Paid for it once and Win8.1 IS an Update of Win8? Maybe someone can find out more and pass it on
As far as I know you are not blocked from updating to 8.1 though the Windows Store. Your just blocked from downloading the update/ISO via the web link work around. Technically Microsoft is not responsible for tech support for OEM versions, you go to the OEM, Dell, HP, Acer etc.

You can close the thread if you want. If you have some time to spare have a look at these threads.

An update on the Win 8.1 Update this May help

Good-morning alphanumeric Just to update you' I upgraded to 8.1 it took 4 hour's but went seamlessly. I did not have to activate nor enter any 'Product Key' so maybe that JPEG that I sent saying "Dasha will enter Key Automatically" is what happened? OR (I had forgotten to mention) I also have a my "Orig Windows 8 OEM number " It's the only thing I can think of? I entered nothing, once the process started I was just a "Passenger" 3 Boot-up's later and my "Original Windows 8 Microsoft account Password" at the start-up and here I am ready now to do Boot-able Flash USB using the 8.1 ISO.

alphanumeric In the last two links in your last post that one that has all of the Code' is that the Windows 8.1 ISO Cobba? what do I do with that? is that what I put onto the Boot-able Flash USB? If so how? do I copy & save it all to the Desktop> then just "Move to" Drive 'j' (the Re-Boot-able Flash USB) do i have to do anything to 'Arm it" I was gonna just go back to that other Process using Rufus and then Enter the (Changed) Core Windows 8 to Win 8.1 Product Key OR the OEM number I just mentioned? Cheers Dasha

If you updated though the Windows Store no product code is needed. It just verifies that your system is activated and legal and then updates what needs to be updated.

The code listed in the first post of that second link is the file names and MD5 hash codes for the leaked ISO files. Its what you use to verify that what you downloaded is original and hasn't been modified or tampered with. Anybody that downloaded an ISO off of say bit-torrent would check the MD5 hash code of their ISO against what it should be.

As far as what you put on a flash drive and how you do it, that depends on how you did your update and what files you saved while doing it.

If you read though those threads I linked too, you'll likely find your answer as to whether your OEM product code can be used to activate 8.1. I do believe it can. Unfortunately though, it can't be used to download the ISO as per the other thread. How to download the Windows 8.1 ISO
