Hi to all,
I have emailed and called dell but I still cant get an answer from them. I got this new pc around Sept 28[SUP]th[/SUP] . The problem I am having is when I insert a dvd it doesn’t give me an option although I have it set to ask me what action to take. I have to double click computer and then I get the option to view with VLC or Cyber link media if I click on cyber link it says it is not responding and I need to buy the premium version. I have windows media player as my default player so I wonder why it is not in the menu?

Do I need to install and also how do I install windows media player and cyber link media. I thought I should be able to burn a dvd right out of the box but I cant I had to install Ashampoo to burn a dvd.
My pc is a Dell inspiron 660S Windows 8 64 bit it says but in control panel it shows Java as 332 bit? ,do you need the service tag number I can provide it if needed. Thanks in advance for any help.

Java was probably 32 bit.

Sounds like you got a bad computer, I'd take it back and get a replacement. Bring your DVDs.

As far as Cyberlink Power DVD, there is a free version of Power DVD 11, and I never had trouble with it playing anything. Windows Media Player will NOT play DVDs any longer, you have to get Media Centre.

If it is having trouble playing your DVDs, check your DVDs, make sure they are clean and buff out the bottom side. Try them out in a Home DVD player to make sure they run, cos DVDs have a short lifespan especially if it is something you play a lot, I ruined my Hellboy Director's Cut DVD just by playing it too much and they don't make it anymore, so I cant buy a new copy.

Check out your Media in other computers, try new DVDs in your computer.

Finally, in Control Panel, go to

Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\AutoPlay

and make SURE that this box is checked.

If it is not, then nothing you set will work.

I didn't know Windows media player didn't play dvds anymore,I can still use it for mp3 I know.

You cant burn a DVD with PowerDVD either, you can only use IMGburn or use Windows Explorer. Dont delete VLC, its the only program that will allow you to watch a DVD.

If you need to copy your DVDs, you will have to buy Slysoft ANYDVD, it's the only way to legally back up your DVDs. You can use it, cos it don't touch the Encoding on a Disk, it just makes an exact dupe.

As far as windows Just stick an empty DVD into the Burner, and drag the "Video_TS" folder straight onto the drive, then right click and choose "Burn" and when it asks, "Burn as a Disk" not as a flash drive.

Delete that 'ashampoo" it may have a virus. - Download IMGBurn, you can assemble a DVD and then burn it straight to disk.

Oh Yah, now that the Autoplay is turned on, when you stick a blank disk in a drive, it will now ask you how to handle it- You should be able to burn from Windows 8 that way.

This is the reply from dell .
Windows 8 media player cannot play or record video dvd's so you have to open the dvd with your video player software. Dell included Cyberlink video software on new computers that is miles ahead of VLC. Uninstall the flaky VLC and use the Cyberlink software as the default to play video dvd's. Cyberlink is not working because you installed VLC. Remove it and reboot and use Cyberlink as the default.

Flaky VLC heh? Well, don't do it, it's the best player there is.

Dell Jerkies don't like it because it is miles above their understanding, there is a reason why it is called "VideoLAN" - It is intended for streaming content across networks, as well as playing local content.

But having VLC and Cyberlink will not cause any problems, you should use VLC by default anyway, it has better playback, thats whgy I stopped using Cyberlink years ago.

Dell has some extra DVD burning software, but it is a joke, just keep using what you paid for, Both Roxio and Ashampoo will do it.

I've come across Ashampoo that had a virus embedded in the installer, thats why I shy away from it, but if you got it straight from them, it should be OK.

Miles ahead of VLC, that guy doesn't have a CLUE.
