    Anybody can rep.

Did you get it to work ?

Ok, I attached this wired keyboard to the puter, and at startup, the Num Lock key briefly flashed, but then went out. It was off when the computer completed its boot sequence. Once I started the password, Num Lock wasn't active.

So, I'm back to thinking it's something in Windows 8 at this point. And, since Num Lock no longer works on the other computer after installation of Win 8.1, it's inclined to agree with me.

BTW, the vbs script seems to turn Num Lock off and on, but doesn't hold true at startup.

OP might have to try a clean install of Windows 8.1 if this issue is not resolved through EightForum or Microsoft, that's my only input.

I could probably do that; I've done it with both laptops. I formatted the Vista drive and installed Windows 7 Ultimate on one and did the same to Windows Home Premium that came on the other.

But then, I hesitate to mess with this one . . . Other than the Num Lock button, HP did a good job and there are things I like about it.

It would be better to try a refresh before a clean install.
I tried to rep you but I used up my quota for today.

Oh, I thought you were giving them to Nemix. I'll try that next.

BTW, do we geeks ever sleep? I woke up and got up and came in here just to see if y'all were still awake.

Another aside: Even if the wired keyboard had worked, I'm not too sure I could give up my Logitech Wave keyboard. After typing on it for awhile, those chicklet jobbies just don't have what it takes.

    Hi again Wynona,

Sorry my "turn off fast boot recommendation did not work for you; however, I did some very specific testing on my UEFI 8.1 installation and here's how mine works:

    TEST #1:
I have a UEFI BIOS with a Num-Lock ON/OFF Option set to ON.
With the above option set, and Win 8 Fast Startup Enabled, my Num-Lock "last key state" will be "remembered on next boot.
So, if the Num-Lock key is ON when I shutdown, it will boot as ON during the next boot.
However, if I push the Num-Lock key "OFF", it will remain OFF during the next boot.

    TEST #2:
IF I go into the BIOS and toggle the Num-Lock Option to OFF and turn off Fast Startup in Windows 8.1, the Num-Lock key remains OFF on a consistent basis. Conversely, if I set it to ON, it remains ON.

If you decide to retest based on my testing, I would advise you to be patient and reboot (at least once) after changing to make sure the options have been fully set. Good luck.

Hehehe, I've turned this computer off and on so much, the last time I turned it on there was text on the screen that said, "Lady, would you please make up your mind!? Either turn me on or off! You're making me dizzy as H E Double Toothpick! And, for the record, I'll see you in hades before I turn Num Lock on at startup for you! So there!"

So far, here's what I've done, some of them numerous times:

BIOS - Booted into BIOS, Num Lock is set to on (BTW, on HP computers, hit the Escape key about once per second to get in)
Registry - Went into Registry changed InitialKeryboardIndicators to 2 as suggested (Changed the key to 0, rebooted, back to 2 etc.)
Ease of Access - Onscreen keyboard: Turned Num Lock off on the keyboard (didn't work) turned Num Lock on on the keyboard (still didn't work)
Power Options/System Settings - Turned off Fast Startup (didn't work)
Num Lock On at Shutdown - Num Lock is always on at shutdown, but off on a reboot. (didn't work)
Updated Keyboard Drivers - Num Lock still doesn't work at startup
Numlock.vbs - all this script seems to do is turn Num Lock on or off and doesn't keep Num Lock active on reboot.
    Scannow and Dism /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth - (didn't work)
Wired Keyboard - Attached wired keyboard that came with system and Num Lock briefly flashes, but is not active on startup
BIOS and Fast Startup- Went back into BIOS and made sure Num Lock is on (Fast Startup) is on. Num Lock key is always on when I shut down, since I have to use numbers in my password (as an accountant in the past, I'm experienced with 10-key pads)

So far, all I get is that this computer refuses to obey the built-in commands it's been given.
