Hello,
I have been using W8 on my secondary computer. It does not get that much use. So I really haven't kept up with developments or features of the 8.1 upgrade. I had set up W8 by removing all cloud application (ALL) and replacing them with computer based programs. Somehow I perceived that 8.1 would allow me to do that and would have a start button, like it should IMHO.
I have either not installed it right, or have made wrong assumptions as I have updated just the other day. There seem to be tons of cloud apps and I can't get rid of them the easy way. How would one go about turning off all cloud access, finding and deleting all cloud based apps and replacing them, as I did on W8????? Help!!!!
It appears that there is no way IMHO to make a recovery disk. A bunch of NEW apps listed!! I do not ever wish to sync or store or access any clouds.
Thanks for any information and assistance. I basically used W8 as it worked well and fast on an older computer!

Regards,
glennc

For recovery I used Macrium Reflect & imaged all my local drives.
It took up 28 GBs on a 32 GB usb drive.
Yours may be of different size.
Macrium saves EVERYTHING on the computer.

As to cloud apps, if you go to charm bar and click settings, then change pc settings you will find all sorts of settings, I have not messed around in there yet but you might find something. As long as you have a local user account it won't do the cloud part I don't think. If you had to sign in with a Microsoft account then you do not have a local user account and there are some threads here relating to making changes. You do not want to make a local account and just delete the MS one as that will delete your data.

I do use Macrium, and thanks. But the IIRC the Windows Recovery Disk offered options beyond just having a system image.
I see that there is some kind of USB thing. What is the world coming too ???? :)

Hello exscentric,
Did not know that. Was always concerned about having a login with the same password as Microsoft Account. Will definitely try to hunt that down. The install to 8.1 tried to get me to make my admin account non-local. Also will look at the charm bar, many thanks!!

Hello and Woopy (partially)!
exscentrix's link to Brink's tutorial worked perfect. It stated that I could no longer connect to the cloud as a local account, but all previous stuff was still there.
Hopefully that will kill off a lot of cloud apps, I hope. The PC settings were not specifically helpful, but somethings needed changing!

Hi glennc,
I thought you wanted to switch between Microsoft A/C and Local Account, by using Local account, you can avoid the "Cloud" but switching to Local account won't result in any Data loss. Thanks for the rep.

brummyfan,
I am slow. Until today I didn't realize/think about being able to dump the Microsoft A/C. As mentioned I did so, finally. From your comments, as I don't know, I am no longer using the cloud in anyway? Does this mean that all the 8.1 application that I haven't been able to remove like camera and several others, won't work!!! That is the way I had W8 running. Appreciate anymore insight into this subject area that you care to share. Don't know much!!
Thanks still more!
