Separate DVD-ROM drives in "This PC" ?

Separate DVD-ROM drives in "This PC" in Windows 8.1?

    Hi,

I got a small question. Consider this screenshot from first page:

I just want to know, is it possible to seperate the DVD-ROM drives into seperate categories like they were in Windows 8 and all other previous versions.

In 8.1, now the DVD-ROM drives appear mixed under the "Devices and Drives" depending on drive letter. I even have an iPhone Browser and Nokia Phone Browser appearing here, both of which have no drive letters. They aren't even drives.

I would like to take these icons out of the Hard Drives into an "Other" category like they were in Windows 7 and 8.

Please tell me there is a way for this. it really bothers me cos I have a lot of drives and was so used to the position each drive appeared.

    Thanks.

Thanks for moving the post to a new topic. I wasn't sure if I needed to make a new thread.

Anyway, this is what I would like to see:

In previous windows "group by type" used to seperate out the DVD-ROMs, the hard drives and any other removable drives or icons.

That was the default and it's already selected. I have tried every single combination. It doesn't work.

I don't have the "Hard Disk Drives" category. Is that screenshot from Windows 8.1 or Windows 8? I know that Windows 8 worked but 8.1 doesn't.

I am thinking there is some sort of way to "Group by comments". But I can't seem to find a place where you can add the comments. It would be a work around if the standard method to group by type is removed from 8.1.

You are absolutely right. Apparently subtle change was done with Windows 8.1, I've just verified it with Windows 8.1

Indeed, removable drives used to be separated and now everything is lumped together.

Windows 8 allows you to mount ISO images, but usually they dismount on reboot.

You got another Program like Daemon Tools or UltraISO or MagicDisc with permanently mounted files? They'll show up as an "Extra Optical Drive"

Ah, I see what you want, you can sort em by "Type" then the HDs and Optical Drives will all be grouped together.

You want em in a vertical line? It won't show like that I don't think.

Maybe it is the BD drive. I just chose "Sort by Type" and all of my optical drives are listed together, and several of them are mounted image files, using MagicDisc. I use Magicdisc to permanently mount images, UltraISO to mount certain types of images, and Explorer to mount the rest of em.

Is that BD drive a physical piece of hardware or is it a mounted image?

It could depend on, what Kind of Drives they are, if they are images, and what program you are using to mount them. Maybe BD drives are not shown next to DVD/CD drives, because of their type? Also, it appears that you have an External Drive mounted in there too.

"Devices with Removable Storage" always show in a separate group. My Computer shows Hard Drives first including any USB drives, Removable Devices including Flash Drives, Cards and Virtual CD's/DVDs in the next group with all "Optical" drives together, Network Drives in the 3rd, and finally iCloud and other online drives in the last.

You have to show Tiles, Sort by Type, Group by Type to get this, so check your Grouping sort as well, make sure Groups are sorted by type.

Some of the posters here are confusing things.

Things have changed in Windows 8.1 from the 8.0 Explorer's view.

There are no 'types' anymore - it's all just 'Devices and drives' lumped together - removable flash drives, external drives, CD and DVD drives, etc.

I have not found a way to separate them like before.
