Windows Media Player not working after 8.1 upgrade

Hi guys,

I recently upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1. After the update Windows Media Player doesn't recognize any of my libraries even though the correct folders are selected to be included.

I already tried to disable the windows media features in the control panel, reboot and then re-enable but that had no effect.

Incidentally, if I manually start playback of a song from a folder windows media player does work so the issue is just that it won't recognize my libraries.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,

Is anyone else even having this problem or am I alone on this one? I don't see this issue listed by anyone else.

I see this, too.

I don't usually use Media Player, but when I looked at it today, it seemed to lose the library location.

Going to 'Tools->Options->Rip Music->Change' -- I can't get it to accept the library location.

I think Microsoft is not too concerned with Music Media in Windows 8+.

I use other 3rd party media tools.

Use Foobar 2000 and VLC Media Player, WMP in Windows 8.1 is raw sewage.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I found the problem.
Windows 8.1 seems to deprecate Libraries.
Go to the Libraries folder and reset the Music Library location.
Then the Media Player will rebuild it's library.

But I agree with XweAponX - use a third-party media player.

Thanks for the tip. This seemed to do the trick, my media library is rebuilding as I type this.

BY reset libraries, I meant open the Libraries 'folder' select the library with a right-click and in the properties remove and add the library folder.

even after doing this i still get WMP errors saying that i cant rip cd's due to not having the proper codecs ? don't these COME with the WMP ? how do i get "the proper codecs" ? alternative (preferably free ) programs to rip cd's ? this is getting ridiculous.

Audio CDs are usually in WAV format and no special codecs are needed. If the CD is specially coded you will need to hunt down the codecs. There are audio and video codec packages available for download - just search for them.

You may have a DATA CD - if so, you can just copy the files, no need to 'rip'.

Still, once copied, if you can't play them back you need to find the proper codecs for WMP or try an alternate player.

If you look in Windows file explorer at the CD/DVD drive, if the drive shows "Audio CD" and CDFS file system you have a true audio CD. If you open the drive the tracks will appear as files with a CDA extension.

If you see anything else you probably have a data disk with music files stored on it as regular files - not CD tracks.

win8.1 Media player fails

BY reset libraries, I meant open the Libraries 'folder' select the library with a right-click and in the properties remove and add the library folder.
I did this and renamed the music folder too. Still no luck. I have been using the VLC media player but they all work EXCEPT the Microsoft crap. I have the same problem with another machine using a Lenovo board. All of the problems I have had with Win8 have reverted to the operating system, NOT the hardware.
