    Wierd Movie File Issue

I installed Windows 8.1 a couple of days ago and I am having a crazy issue with my movie files. Any file that dosnt show a thumbnail wont play, if however I drag it to the desktop it will display a thumbnail and play. If I try playing one in VLC it has an error 'of bad file descriptor'.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled my codecs and they are all up to date. Any help would be gratefully received.

If the file is not showing a Poster Image, then the file itself has been fouled up. This can happen if it has been moved around several times.

There is a Setting in VLC that can repair the bac AVI index, but you have to enable it.

Otherwiwe, you will have to use DIVFIX, if is is a DivXviD file.

But before you do that, run a CHKDSK on the hard drive where you have these stored. That could also cause this to happen. Start with a quick CHKDSK, if that dont fix it, then do a full CHKDSK.

Sorry I should have said that I have run CHKDSK. The file has not been moved, if I do move it however to another disk it becomes usable again.
I am thinking it is a disk problem although I have checked all permissions it still asks me for admin rights when using drag and drop to this disk.

Did you try a full CHKDSK?

Google for DivFix. DivXviDs usually get attached to AVI files so that should work.

If you think it is a deeper disk (sorry, typo) problem, you have to go deeper than CHKDSK, you have to scan the whole drive.

I use Hiren's Boot CD, and there are severl OEM Drive Scanning tools, I use GWscan, but WDDIag and Seagate Seatools are on there too.

If it is an SSD drive, you cant use those.

Yes I did a full CHKDSK on reboot.
It is .avi, .mkv, .mp4 files not just avi. I will have another go at it when I get home from work tonight, if it dosent work I will have to replace the disk I guess.

But on Windows 8 it is fine, just not 8.1.

Ah, ok. So maybe it is VLC itself, maybe it does not like 8.1.

What are you Dual Boot, or are the files on an external drive or a drive on another machine?

Ok I see something: Your Videos are on a separate Drive, buy you have them attached to a Library in 8.1

Try disconnecting that drive from the Library, and then try adding the files into VLC right from the drive.

    Let me know what happens.

I didn't dual boot but I have a system image of Windows 8 that I checked it on.

Ok, post and let me know what happens.

I know this: Your Windows Video Library will find every Video File in your system and add it to your Library- I don't know how this happens, but it happened in my system.

If you added the drive manually to the Library, then you should be able to remove it.

I found the problem. I had previously enabled full permission in the security settings but that isn't enough.
You have to click on Advanced and tick 'Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object' then click 'Enable inheritance' and Apply.
I hope this helps someone else out.

I've never seen that setting, or just maybe never noticed it, was it set as "Disabled" for only the User Account attached to the Library, or was it disabled across ALL listed accounts? I need to know how this works.
