Computer does not turn off when shut down from charms bar.

I built a custom PC about a month ago, and did a clean install of an OEM copy of Windows 8 with no problems. Upon launch this past Thursday, I downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store, which I like except for one problem:

Shutting down the computer by pressing the power button or "shut down" from the charms bar power menu shuts down Windows, but leaves the computer itself on and running, case fans spinning and all. Oddly enough shutting down the computer using the menu I get by right-clicking the new start button shuts down the computer properly, and that is the only way to do it without flipping the computer's power switch. That said, I would still like it to work 100% properly. What is happening?

Good to see I'm not the only one with this problem. Mine started just after I installed 8.1 from the store as well. When I shut down or restart my PC, the screen goes off but the PC keeps running. I have to use either the physical power button or restart button to shutdown/restart the PC. I used Acronis to go back to Windows 8 and the problem solved. Just tried 8.1 again and the problem is back.
I read somewhere that it was related to McAfee virus protection or a driver called express cache but I have neither. Apparently this shutdown/restart problem was big in the 8.1 Preview and apparently it wasn't fixed.
IT doesn't seem anyone else is having this issue or at least to a point where it's being talked about or fixed.
I'll just have to go back to Windows 8 and wait for further updates.

Interesting. I stumped the Windows support staff in the live chat. Said it might have something to do with the BIOS settings, but i don't know where to start

There are now two other threads in these forums talking about the issue, so that's good. Someone said disabling the homegroup and changing the workgroup to local connection fixed it on their computer. I tried that with no luck; maybe it will work for you. The two threads were under Performance & Maintenance.

No dice on the homegroup fix. Good looking out, though. I'll have to track those threads. the only similarity i see between you and I are the z87 chip sets on the motherboard, but the problem can't be specific to them or else there'd be way more people with this problem, I think. I can't imagine what it is, though. The strangest part is that it works from the start button right-click menu but not the charms menu or the power button. I'll keep you updated if anything changes.

That's odd that your right-click menu works but the charms bar doesn't. Any function I use, whether it's the right-click, charms, or even my Start8 application, it still shows the same problem.
