Text rendering problems after Windows 8.1 install

First off, I'm seeing this with Firefox v24 and have not tested this with IE or Chrome. I also have not seen this anywhere but browsing the net as text seems to be fine locally. Anyone else seeing this? All I need to do to fix the text is to scroll the page a bit.

    Yes, I have had this:

It's not doing it now but I can't be very helpful as to a cure. I can only say what happened.

When the 8.1 upgrade had finished, I immediately made a disk image of the system and then started installing programs. Firefox was one of them and I got the problem you have. Other Gecko-based browsers did the same thing (Waterfox - Pale Moon) although not so badly. I updated my graphics driver but it didn't make any difference. Changing Firefox's smooth scrolling and hardware acceleration settings didn't either. Comodo Dragon (based on Chromium) was fine, so I'd imagine Google Chrome would be too. I searched for others having the same problem with Firefox since the 8.1 upgrade but nobody else seemed to reporting it at the time.

Ultimately, some of the bookmarks in the Favourites Bar in IE 11 went blank. Not related to the above but probably because I had been experimenting with WOT, Adblock Plus etc in IE. This happening was the last straw at the end of a long day and I went gratefully back to Windows 8 via a disk image.

Not to be defeated, I went back to 8.1 this morning using the disk image made just after the upgrade. When the system was up and running, I updated it straightaway and then installed Firefox. I have not had the blurry text problem this time around (so far) but I can't give you a reason why not. I don't think I did anything different to last time, apart from maybe updating 8.1 before installing Firefox.

I realise this doesn't help but it at least it lets you know that somebody else has had the problem. Perhaps others will be able to give a reason for it. I'll post again if the trouble comes back.

I used to get that all the time on machines before I installed Clear Type, when it was a stand alone app.

ClearType is supposed to be part of these OSes now.

Is the text you screencapped from a Tile Browser window or a Desktop Browser window? Because IE 10/11 and Chome tile versions have crappy text rendering. You say this is Firefaux? Try Zooming in and out, see if that changes anything.

I had this problem in Firefox after my 8.1 upgrade until I disabled hardware acceleration. In Firefox settings, go to Advanced > General > Browsing and uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available. You might have to restart Firefox and/or Windows before you see any effect.

I am also having this problem. I spent the day troubleshooting and researching it. Resetting the FF zoom did nothing, unchecking hardware acceleration did not, adjusting clear text in Windows did nothing, changing the font used in Ff did nothing, using a clean FF profile did nothing. The only thing I have not tried is a complete uninstall of Norton Internet Security. Although Norton is working just fine on Windows 8.1 and is fully updated, I wonder if it is an issue. Probably not though, because Firefox has had the same problem off and on since version 3. I have been unable to find a valid cause or fix online. I cannot upgrade the video card drivers or I will lose my ability to play Adera, but the drivers worked fine before the 8.1 upgrade. IE and Chrome are not having this issue, nor is the general system. I found an add-on called Anti-Aliasing Tuner that I may try next. Since it is an older add-on, some editing of the .rdf file may be necessary to get it to work on FF 24. I will post back if it works or if I find a solution.

Norton is probably not the cause as I run Kaspersky AV.

    Good to know...

vram, thanks so much for letting me know this. It is an important piece of troubleshooting for me, to know you have the problem with Kaspersky as well. That is my other internet security suite on my desktop. Since I have not updated the desktop from Windows 7, I will avoid doing so for now as well.

    Hello again vram,

Some using FF are reporting this issue but not all; however, Microsoft did acknowledge a fuzzy text issue per this article:

Microsoft to Fix Blurry Text Bug in Windows 8.1 RTM Rumo

BTW, I am using FF 25 and I do not have that issue.
