Questions regarding 8.1

Hello.
On Windows 8 I had a local account and was only signed it to the mail/contacts app and that worked just fine.
But after updating to Windows 8.1 I can't figure out how to do this. It is possible?
What I don't really like about setting up my account as my Microsoft account is that it logs you in to everything like Skype etc. And there does not seem to be a way to log out from skype only without switching back to a local account.

I am also wondering something else. Back in february I bought Windows 8 when it was really cheap, that upgrade deal.
I'm guessing it is still a full license though, since I can do a clean install using that license and .ISO I got?
My brother have access to MSDN with free student licenses and I can download a 8.1 .ISO from there. I just don't want to have to install 8 and then do the update to 8.1 every time I need to reinstall Windows.
Do you think my license will work using the 8.1 .ISO?

Hi there and welcome to Eight Forums!

Windows 8.1 uses a Microsoft Account as general account. So it's no longer possible to have only a local account. You can however create a local account after you've logged on with a Microsoft Account. Then you can decide only to use that local account.

If you have an upgrade licence and you want to do a full reinstall of Windows you can't simply install the ISO from 8.1 and use your key. You must install the origional Windows first (I guess that would be 7?) and then upgrade to 8.0 Then you can upgrade via the store to 8.1.
Remember you don't have to update the Windows versions before upgrading. So unplugg the InternetCable first when you are doing a full reinstallation ;).

You could also use the 'repair' function that's build into Windows 8.1.

Hi homtr,
You could also do the following if you don't want to use the Microsoft account to log in,
Go to Change PC settings in charms bar, click your accounts, just below your e-mail address find "disconnect" and you can log out, then log in as your previous local account. Hope I understood you correctly.

This is a false statement "Windows 8.1 uses a Microsoft Account as general account. So it's no longer possible to have only a local account. You can however create a local account after you've logged on with a Microsoft Account. Then you can decide only to use that local account. "

What i mean is you do not need to have a M$ Account... And you can start for a local account on install or upgrading. Its simple... All you need to do is disconnect from your network when you setting up or upgrading. It will bypass this and allow you to login locally and DO NOT NEED a microsoft account.

Please dont say that lol.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I just wanted to ask, is it really a upgrade license? I mean a few months ago when I had Windows 8 installed I wanted to reinstall it so I put the W8 disc in and selected custom during the installation and formatted the HDD and it worked fine. So I did not have to do an upgrade from W7.

I also found another way during the installation of 8.1 right now! I used one of my brothers licenses since my 8 key didn't work with the 8.1 as Der Snoober said.
I had was connected to the internet during installation and when I was supposed to enter my Microsoft account details I clicked the create new account text and at the bottom there was another text saying something like "Don't use a Microsoft account", and this would let me create a local account from the beginning!
