Black Screen After Login

I just updated my Compaq Presario CQ56 Laptop.

It boots to the login screen. I enter my password and the screen goes black with just the mouse cursor on the screen. That is it nothing else happens. CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work. When the mouse goes away and I move it the cursor comes back.

Any Ideas?

Thanks
Jim

I could not update the graphics driver in safe mode. I re-installed Windows 8 but during the last update from Windows Update I get error 80070570.

According to Microsoft site I can't upgrade to 8.1 till I get this update. That suck since the update fails.

Open an elevated command prompt and type the following sfc /scannow

wait for it to finish...

If errors found, try this to correct them (same elevated command prompt):

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If still no good:
Try running the MS Windows Update Fixit tool for your version of Windows (search via Google)
Try removing a few of the last Windows Updates installed and then try reinstalling those just removed (individually) again, then try the one that fails again.

Good luck.

He probably can't do it due to lack of task Manager being able to run.

If he had an Install Disk, he can run it from the Command Prompt on there. There should be some Windows 8.1 install disk ISOs if you google and search for em, then you can either burn one, or stick it in a Flash Drive. It don't even need to be the exact version you are running, as long as you can get to the Command Prompt and run the commands M2C told you to run.

Not sure what happened over night but when I powered up my Laptop today the update was there in the store. It was not there last night when I shut it down. I just finished upgrading to 8.1 but for some reason Norton is crashing my laptop. Norton is fine on my desktop.

No, Norton is a BAD Program. When you get the funds, buy Eset NOD32 6, the Antivirus, not the Smart Security. You can even just download a trial, and use it to check to see if you picked up Sirefef from somewhere. but if you have that, you will not be able to install it. There is an Eset Sirefef removal tool, it gets rid of Sirefef, had to use it last week, it got rid of all instances of Sirefef. Just google Eset Sirefef Removal Tool. Do this if your computer is refusing the save the installers for any free AV or Trial of Eset NOD32.

I'm on Cox and they offer Mcafee, it's the worse version of that I've ever seen. Both Norton and Mcafee, are a joke.

I have been using Norton for years and never got a virus that it would not remove. The only reason I took off Norton is because it was not compatible with Windows 8.1.

Ok, as long as it works for you... The stuff I get, Norton can't deal with, i used it for about a year. It just blocks up my system.

If you have to change, I suggest Eset, you may like Norton, but Eset is fully configurable to meet special needs. I have some scripts I run that show up as a Virus even though I made them and know they are safe, it's harder to allow them to pass with Norton, Eset I can add them to the exclusion list. Also it finds heavy hitters like Sirefef, where Norton and Mcafee choke on it. Eset chokes on it too, but at least tells you it is in there, the only way to get rid of it is with the Removal tool.

Other than that, Full Security "Suites" like Mcafee and Norton, add in all kinds of extra stuff as well as the AV program, Firewalls, Toolbars, and stuff it loads into IE or other browsers. I switched to Eset cos it had the smallest footprint of all of the AV programs I've tried. Any AV Program will slow your system down, that one does it the least. I always suspect any AV program that takes over Windows 7-8's already adequate Firewalls. Sometimes you need to block an Internet Address, or a Range of Addresses, you can do that with ESET's AV, right from within the program, and it wont affect the Windows Firewall.

I wonder why Norton came up as not compatible with 8.1, you think it was the version you had, or is there a version that works specifically with 8.1?

Anyway, I'm, sure there is a free substitute that will work until you decide what to get, the only one I don't like is AVG Free, Sirefef breaks right through it.

I better get rid of AVG. I just put it on my laptop yesterday. I have been using Norton version from Comcast. It works on my Desktop on Windows 8.1 but when I tried to install it on my Laptop running Windows 8.1 it said OS not supported which is weird since it's running fine on my desktop.

I'm going to check out Eset right now. I have never heard of it.

Antivirus is a hard one to pick. If I ask 10 people which is the best I will get 10 different answers.

Just about every AV program gives you a free trial, you you can keep trying them until you find what you like. Avoid things that say "Suite", if it takes over your Firewall, you don't want that - Windows Firewall is a necessary service, some of these programs shut it off.

Thanks. I will give it a try when I get the cash. $39 might not sound like much but for me right now it is. I got a loan for my daughter, the payments are $440 a month. She got her 35 hours a week job cut to 8 hours a week. Needles to say she has not been paying me the payments for several months now. The loan payments are deducted from my check. I borrowed the money from my 401K. I have to juggle things around. My gas and electric bill is $835.

Hi Jim,

Sorry to hear about the problem. The current version of Norton security Suite from Comcast is not yet compatible with Windows 8.1. We are currently working with comcast to provide a compatible version of Norton for Windows 8.1 and it will be available to you via your comcast account soon. In meantime, if you would like to get protection from Norton, you can use a 30 days trial of the latest Norton Internet Security which is compatible with Windows 8.1:
http://www.norton.com/latestnis

Norton Internet Security provides the same security features of Norton Security Suite, but only for limited days of subscription-30. We will be updating Norton Security Suite for Comcast soon and you can install that once it is available. Feel free to contact me if you need any further help with using Norton products.

Thanks!
Harry

Thanks for the offer but I don't wan't to do the 30 day trial. At the end of the 30 day trial if I don't have the money to purchase Norton or Comcast still don't have a version for Windows 8.1 them I'm back to uninstalling Norton trial then installing a free version again. I would rather wait.
