If you have a modern UEFI BIOS then it normally will only run a Windows signed boot drive or usb.
The only disk image companies that can provide a bootable recovery drive that I know of are Easus ToDo and Paragon. Nero recovery disks, for example, will not boot.

Easus sent me an ISO file to make a bootable CD. You can also use that to make a bootable USB thumb drive or external hard drive that will boot a Windows 8 repair program. My recovery CD works.

If you do have an older BIOS then rescue disk or USB booting is straightforward and will work.

There must be thousands of people regularly backing up drive images that will be very disappointed they cannot actually run them to repair crashes, virus attacks. Microsoft still does not work for users but for its own blinkered satisfaction. I am working towards the Chromebook solution of secure, maintenance free computing as soon as possible. It is staggering to consider the hours of frustration and total waste of human lifetimes in the world trying to maintain ever more complex and incompatible systems.

Yes but presumably the Windows recovery drive created by Windows itself, as mentioned by my2cents, will boot OK. You could then use that to restore a system image.

I think somebody was asking for a cd/dvd instead of usb ? Like recdisc makes in win7.

MS doesn't include a way to do that , but it should be pretty easy.

You are right but the Windows image recovery in Advanced is well hidden and you need to have your USB boot drive ready before Windows fails. I don't think many average users would do that or even know where Windows image restore was hidden or even if it works provided they even knew how to use it. They probably are only restoring an image when the computer is not working and may have no internet access to help. My point was that they have some proprietary image software that does not tell that when you come to use it - it might not work - when all versions of Windows and BIOS before it worked like a charm. The Windows image restore may or may not work - until you try it at time of need you just don't know. We have gone backwards for no gain.

Who knows what a mess might happen if, in panic, they press the F12 key for an OEM built-in restore to W8.1 that is meant only for a W8.0 OS restore.

Best thing is probabaly to make a new image. You could use the recimg thing, but one of the free 3rd party programs is vastly better. The average user won't know to do that, sadly.

Couldn't he use ESD-ISO to create the ISO then burner software to create a bootable install DVD, as long as the ESD folder is present?

    Option 2 here? https://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...ad-create.html
