Well that was a disaster, I installed the windows 8.1 update thinking it would just upgrade the system but it looks as though it's done a reinstall. I've now got loads of things not working, my programs have lost lots of there settings and it seems really slow.

I'm currently restoring a true image back up and I'm praying it's going to work , I don't think I'll bother with 8.1 until I reinstall the system from scratch.

Has anyone got it installed without problems. I'm not the biggest Apple fan in the world but at least when they upgrade IOS you don't lose any settings!!

I did a fresh format and install of Windows 8 64 Bit Pro. Sorry but I couldn't live without a start button so I have installed the Start8 start menu which is great. I try sometimes not to use it but find metro frustrating to find programs as I have many. I will use Metro for apps only and desktop of serious computing.

Has anyone got it installed without problems.

Yes; however I did a clean install via an ISO which is not generally available to non Technet and MSDN subscribers.

I had several things that didn't work, Speedfan (hardware monitor) wouldn't load. Desktop gadget program would not display properly. The computer seemed to be really slow. Lots of my programs had lost there settings like they had been reinstalled. I looked in the add remove programs list and a lot of my program were listed as being installed today.

I will install 8.1 next time I do a full format and install, hopefully there will be a 8.1 DVD by then. True Image successfully restored my PC to Win 8.

Sounds like a good plan and I hope MS hears you on this issue. Anyway, you were one of the smart ones that had a backup plan and I'm glad it worked for you! Cheers!

Perhaps that's why I lost some settings on my programs, it seems to me like 8.1 is a fully operating system install and not an update like a service pack

Per this article, there will not be a 8.1 ISO/DVD. Things could change if enough people complain.

I've had a few users ask whether Microsoft plans to make Media (.ISO) updates available to the general public for Windows 8.1. The answer is no.

A spokesperson noted that the only way to update a retail-activated Windows 8 computer to Windows 8.1 will be to go through the Windows Store and download the updated bits. However, .ISO-based updates will be supported for volume-license installations (as well as for TechNet, MSDN and DreamSpark subscribers).

Why isn't Microsoft making the .ISO files broadly available for Windows 8.1? Another spokesperson told me it's because "8.1 was intended as an update for users with Windows 8 already installed." I know Windows Store downloads have been problematic for a number of users and spotty Internet has made downloading from the Store a challenge for some (especially outside the U.S.). But that's all Microsoft officials are saying right now about .ISOs.

yeah it not like a service pack , it was a kernal upgrade ,has a different build number than win8 ,so that explains the setting changes

Well, this is just stupid. Now I have to download the same 3.62GB of data again on my other Windows 8 PC. The upgrade was supposed to be free. Wasting internet volume and bandwidth costs money.

i agree but ,no bandwidth cap here ,so i pay the same monthly payment ,
and owning multiple computers could also be considered a wast of money, for home users,so if its a business and it has many computers just buy a retail copy

Yes, owning both a desktop and a laptop, both of which came with Windows 8 OEM, is a waste of money for home users. However, your reply has only strengthened my conviction the only reason why is because M$ had decided to *make* it that way.

yeah, the more i think about it ,it is dumb not to have the choice of downloading a ISO file if you want one,i have msdn acct so its not an issue for me right now,if not for that i would be wanting to be able to download a iso file for sure
