Shawn - You mean to say the Skydrive Desktop Application CANNOT be installed in Windows 8.1????

    and Grr
The SkyDrive desktop app could be installed in Windows 8.1, but it's pointless to do so since it doesn't do anything now that SkyDrive is fully integrated in Windows 8.1.

So, Skydrive is built into the directory structure of 8.1? Maybe they should install the desktop app anyway, if it makes it sync quicker.

    Jon,

Yep, SkyDrive is fully integrated in Windows 8.1.
I think it's some sort of issue on Tucker's system causing it. SkyDrive has always synced almost instantly for me on all my systems and VMs.

Many many people are having the same problem. They are asking online in various places. Unlike here on 8 forums, the lame responses vary from 'use the website' to 'it does work, you're just useless at computers' All very helpful.

Anyway, my solution having tried various tips and tricks...

    1. Use gdrive for instant backup
    2. Carry on using Skydrive for deliberate uploads of photos from apps such as Windows Live Photo Gallery. Also to Flickr.
    3. Ditched Skydrive sync by having my PC on local account. No point it running when it doesn't work.
    4. Wait for the daft suggestions elsewhere to stop and maybe someone will, hopefully here, come up with a solution.
    5. Also wait for the skydrive 8.1 integration to be updated in such a way as it works for me.

I envy you guys for which skydrive sync works instantly. I like skydrive and happily use it still. Just not for running backups.

Not really progress then, is it... I also use a local account on my laptop because that is what I prefer. Even though I am fully integrated into the MS ecosystem (Windows Phone, Surface Tablet and Windows 8.1 laptop) they keep making things more difficult to use. Skydrive is a pain to use now and transferring files via Bluetooth is more difficult than it needs or should be. Everything works, but requires more steps than it did with Win 7 or 8.

That's all the more reason I am thinking of 8.1 now as the new Vista. Honestly, since it was released, this forum has been flooded with new issues.

Now that I got my Core Duo I'm going to put it in, but I have an Intel D945GL mb and it may be on the list of unsupported boards.

Hello mkerala, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Thank you for the addition. It's always nice to have more options.

That's a nice additional option to use, but it should be noted that this is only mapping SkyDrive as a network location using the "map network drive" feature, and the mapped SkyDrive will only be available while you are online.

The local user would have more options available by signing into their SkyDrive online at SkyDrive.com in the browser though.

Unlike Google Drive, Skydrive online version is not at all useful. It won't allow folder to be uploaded. But with network drive map you can do that. If you want files offline simply copy the entire drive content to local drive.

I think this is the only option available for Windows 8.1 local account.
